I'm out in south central Nebraska and we have some pretty hard water. In fact I almost chipped a tooth on it, it's that hard! But seriously, I was having a very hard time drying my car quickly, even if I washed in the shade. No matter what, I'd get some serious spotting.
My inline water softener arrived yesterday from Pure Water Products (www.pwgazette.com, Autogeek sells the same/similar one). It's roughly the size of a 1 liter soda bottle and installs inbetween your spigot and hose. This thing is a miracle! I had virtually NO spotting at all! I didn't let the vehicle completely air dry however. I dried using a CWB and WWMF. However, it was a black car washed in direct sunlight on a sunny day around 78F.
For the housing and two filters I paid around $60. Well worth the $$$. The filters are rechargeable, you just soak them in a brine solution of water and regular softener salt. The only negative seems to be a *slight* reduction in water pressure, but it might just me being crazy. If you have trouble with spotting, this is a great alternative to buying an expensive deionizer or reverse osmosis system.
