Water spots - a sealant only phenomenon?

Are water spots a sealant only phenomenon? I have had some issues with a particular sealant, and I have read others with similar issues with a variety of sealants, however I can't seem to recall anyone having issues with carnaubas.

The fact that unprotected cars don't get water spots has me wondering if when the wax wears off, it starts to sheet, does it reduce the chances of spots?

Which sealant in particular?

Is it Klasse?

I had issues last year with water spots when using Klasse. I bought Poorboys EX sealant and have yet to try it.

My waterspots were so bad I had to use ScratchX to buff the entire car to get them off.

I'd venture to quess that you don't see water spotting with carnauba because each time you wash you remove a portion of the carnauba. After a few washes it's all gone along with the waterspots. The longer a product lasts the more fallout accumulates on top of it.

That theory sounds plausible for water spots based on deposits, but I have had issues with acid rain leaving etched water spots too (with a sealant, not carnauba).

I love UPGP for protection, but not as a LSP because the waters beads and never leaves - even at pretty high speeds.

I find OID over whatever LSP (nuba or sealant) really helps in preventing water spots.

Thats true! Two weeks ago I applied a coat of Fuzion after my coats of Vintage wore off and got some water marks after it was raining for a week and with the Vintage, when I wash the car the deposits did not stick to my car and was easily removed. So I guess that a sealant based waxes does not protect like a carnauba waxes.

It seems the severity of water spotting is less with carnaubas but you still can get them. My solution for water spotting issues is to tell my customers never to park within 15-20 feet of grassy areas. Rain spotting washes away, water from sprinklers tends not to.

My perma-waterspots were not from sprinklers, simply from rain. It was almost as if each one was a tiny area of oxidation...

ScratchX took care of them really quick though.:2thumbs:

I'm wondering if these waterspots could be caused by parking under a tree? I've always parked under my locust tree in the summer because then the car is in the shade 90% of the day.

I think one of the biggest problems is sun showers on hot days.

Quick rain, sun comes out and bakes water spots into car.

Now, as far as what chemicals on your car from the environment add to this, I don't know.

Trees = evil

Trees are filled with sap and birds, they do a lot more damage to your finish than the sun does. Parking under a tree in the rain can kill beading, all the crap in them ends up on your paint when it rains.

I switched from a sealant to 845 because of etching. It should be evident to most Autopians that water spots are going to happen regardless of your LSP. However, some LSP's protect against etching better than others. With 845, I still get water spots, but, unlike the sealant I was using, I no longer get etching.

Yep, even though some argue that 845 is a hybrid, I definitely don't get etched water spots using it.

rain + pollen is the worst I've had, though I do have to drive by at least five lawn sprinklers on my way to work everyday.

I agree completely......

The hot sun really seems to add to problem in the south......
