Water Etching removal

My newly bought used car has extensive water etching problem on the roof. Are there any products (OTC or mail order) that I can use to remove them by hand (don't want to use machine polishing) ?
 
If its "extensive" machine polishing or wetsanding might be your only choice. Have you considered having them looked at by a pro in your area?

That's my next step if I can't get anything that works. I saw some products on-line that claim to remove water spots. I guess they're not strong enough?

Won't remove etching; only removes the hard water deposits.

You can verify this by putting some distilled white vinegar on a microfiber towel and wipe a small area. If it is deposits only, the acid in the vinegar will dissolve minerals. It is is damage, you will still see it.
 
Just ordere some DWSR and can't wait for it to get here. Did make me think of a question though.



If the water spots have etched the paint, would you need to wetsand and polish anyway? So why would you use the DWSR? Or maybe you use it to see if the paint is etched or not? Didn't really think this question through in my head before typing......LOL.......but am curious!

Water spot remover is not going to remove water spot etching damage. So, yes, in this case you will need to use paint correction products.



The reason I recommended using vinegar on a small area before doing anything is so you can see if it is simply tough water spot or water spot damage.

I am looking forward to trying the product! DWG and DPS have totally changed the way I do black cars now so I am excited to try another Danase product!!



Another question just popped in to my little peanut though....Why not just wipe the whole car down with vinegar instead of using the DWSR?

I have never used DWSR, so I can't comment.



I have been using distilled white vinegar for year to remove hard water deposits and cement splatter. Never an issue. Work a small area at a time and wipe dry. Be sure to do it in the garage or a shady area.



If you want, you can do it after you wash you car before you dry it. Simply pour a quart or so of vinegar in a bucket, use a sponge to apply (wipe for a few seconds so it can do its job), and rinse.
 
Yeah....he posted it here. But he only showed pics of the car after polishing. Not directly after applying the DWSR....:(
