Watch out for these types

Classic "rich guy".

This young customer owns a collection of super high-end cars, and i've detailed all these plus his friends' equally expensive cars. He is car crazy and seeks my assistance to get his tinting, high end audio, and custom respray done. I take care of all his babies. Same applies to his group of rich, well-connected buddies. They never bargain, and nothing is too expensive.

3mths ago, he sent his Porsche GT2 to my fav Porsche specialist to fit new rims, and to get some things done.....amounting to a huge bill (4weeks)

That specialist is my friend.

After the work was completed, the was instructed to send the Porsche to my sprayer to do some minor touch-up work (1 week)

Once the touchup work was completed, the sprayer informed me that the Porsche's owner wanted me to detail it. That was a very normal arrangement, and i did the detailing (3days).

The car owner was out of the country and texted me, saying that when he returns in 1weeks time, he'll come to collect the car and pay me for detailing. And he'll go to pay the other guys.

2mths went by, and he was uncontactable.

His rich buddies (my customers also) were uncontactable.

The sprayer and Porsche specialist were all my friends and they were also chasing for payment.

At my last call to him, he answered. From the ringing tone, I knew he was not out of the country. After hearing my pleas, he asked me to REMOVE the car's number plates and cover up the car because he has not paid his car installment for 3months...and the bank will be hiring re-possesors to repossess the car.

Few days later, he collected the car, and paid everyone what he owed them, including myself. WHAT A RELIEF!

His modus operandi:

He knew the bank was looking for his car, and so, he planned to keep the Porsche out from his home by having the car roving from mechanic to sprayer and to the detailer.....hoping to buy some time....for his new influx of cash to come in.

He was never out of the country.

I told myself NEVER again.....to entertain this customer.

Looks rich, looks glamorous. Big house, nice car, fancy shirts, nice chicks.

But it could be a very misleading facade.

This is a normal "rich" person. The customer is probably not rich at all. Rather he is rich in debt. He would be classified as a Under Achiever of Wealth, probably lives his life to the amount of money he grosses yearly. Just like you saw, when **** hits the fan he has zero savings to keep entertaining his life style, therefore he has to lie until he can get more money to live the life style he is use to.

Glad you got paid and like you said, probably not worth dealing with the customer, or each time you do, get a work order signed before hand that the work is to be completed and when it has been completed. That way if he tries to screw you, you have legal obligations in court. I mean hell if the guy still wants work and will pay, no since in losing some money. Just cover your *** just incase.

Wait so let me get this straight... he knew the car was going to be repossessed and as a result left it in your hands for over 2 months just so the bank couldn't find it, he didn't let you know that's what he was doing, and he didn't pay up during that time either.

Why the hell didn't you charge him a hefty storage fee? I sure would have!

Not sure how things work over there, but here there are mechanics liens that might cover you on those sorts of issues.

Generally a mechanics lien requires 3-6 months of no contact. Then you have to send the paper work off proving no contact which generally takes another 1-2 months.

I have no real experience with this but my guess is that if the car was up for repo the car would likely be sold at auction and the bank/lender would get paid first. If a repair order was signed you (the detail shop) might recover some $ but I kind of doubt it.

Not sure I would label him a bum just yet. I know a couple guys who are very asset rich but always seem to be short cold, hard cash because their assets are not easily turned to cash (properties, businesses, etc).

Your understanding of the situation is correct.

I didn't charge him a storage fee....but that detailing job carried a HUGE price tag:drool::drool:and I received a healthy commision from the sprayer and Porsche specialist.

Good lesson learnt:razz:

I had a customer who was ripping off AT&T, Verizon, etc. FBI raided his house and everything. Luckily I had been paid for all the work I'd done for him before it all came crashing down but I know others he dealt with got stuck pretty good, including his VIOP customers. Never had any indication from his mannerisms that anything was out of the ordinary. Anyway, he ended up getting arrested in September 2009 and since he has a plane, passport and access to a lot of money, he has been in jail since awaiting trial.

gigondaz- Wow, sure glad that worked out OK for you and your pals! Well,sorta-OK as you didn't have your payment for quite a while.

Too bad that it could be considered normal :( I guess he might be "rich" as in the scare-quotes, and in the "gee, look at me!" sense, but yeah...sheesh....

The (genuinely) wealthy people I know would rather ride the bus than have creditors chasing after them. Ditto for some honorable people who don't have two cents to rub together.

I guess I'm awfully judgmental on this topic :o but IMO the deception makes me think the guy *is* a bum. Cashflow issues are one thing, but his behavior towards gigondaz and his friends, and even the bank, was inexcusable.

Maybe that experience was worth the pay out?

Nothin like a little exceitement in life to keep the blood flowing right? :hmph:

That specific case would mean I told him I will be happy to continue working for him, CASH PAID UP FRONT, "given the extent that I had to wait for the last payment, certainly you understand *wink*. If he scoffs, just walk. Otherwise, you keep the guy and have cash.

Absolutely the correct manner to handle it.

I gotta say, that was pretty slick of the dude to get the car moved around like that. It sucks that you had to bear his issues though.

Jean-Claude- Yeah, that "cash up front" is the smart answer. I was so [ticked] off I didn't even stop to think of that. Easy for me to let *my* morals deprive gigondaz of a paying customer, huh? :o

Eh, I bet that [individual] sure *thinks* he's slick

Sorry to be so :nono: but this sort of thing simply bugs the [crap] out of me as I can imagine how the people getting jerked around genuinely *need paid* while he's off doing whatever (and probably not paying cash for that either).

Wonder if he jerks his [controlled substance suppliers] around like that :sosad

I had a distant cousin do that, and more, .......he spent 2 months in the hospital & rehab learning to chew again. I wish they've whack the bum.

but where would he get that much money so fast? i mean like 3 month whatever and he made at least 10 g's lol maybe more

Gee, you don't suppose he did anything shady do you?!?

[sarcasm]Maybe he just had to wait for a quarterly dividend distribution or somesuch.[/sarcasm] Actually I guess I shouldn't be such a smart-[aleck] as that could very well be a valid explanation :nixweiss

Wouldn't be surprised if it was more like 50 or 100k that he needed. Mortgage payments add up fast, especially when they are $15k/month and a $2-$3k car payment plus whatever else he was short!
