Waffle pad wants to hop??

I am at 1200 rpm on my rotary and I have tried to center the pad and offset the pad. Tried more and less wax/cut. What am I doing wrong? Thanks guys.

I'm not really a fan of applying wax by machine.
It may be heating up toooooooo fast and breaking down (just a guess)

Sounds like you are using the wrong tool for the job. Most likely the wax is drying up and gumming up your pads, causing it to hop. Switch to a Flex or PC, or just a orbital polisher to apply wax.

I am not a fan of these 3M waffle pads. Going to try the white Presta pad tomorrow or saturday and see how that goes.

What polish are you applying?

I think the 3M waffle pads are very nice, but they are best when used with the polishes they were designed for. ;)

But I have also had problems with the #3 and #9 meguairs stuff as well. And I did verify that I was using both the #3 and #9.

Well typically #9 should work well with that pad on a rotary. #3 is just a pure polish and really has no cleaning abilities.

Some paints simply don't work well with certain pads, polishes, and tools. My car is one of them. Certain polishes when applied with the rotary will generate heat immediately, even at speeds of 600 rpms, and the polish gums up and I get pad squeal. I have found a few polishes that will work on my car with a rotary, but changing over to the DA allowed me to use a lot of the polishes that wouldn't work on the rotary. Something about the random orbit motion of the DA polishers seems to make a big difference.

A few things you can try.

First try wiping over the area with some IPA to make sure there is no previous wax/sealant still on the car. Sometimes this can make polishing difficult.

If that doesn't seem to help then I think it's time to try a different polish or different tool.

Do you have any local paint and body shop supply stores around you?

I do. Part of the problem might be that because the car is black I do wax it either by hand or machine after every wash.

 Maybe, but how can the pad know what color the car is?Try to use a spray wax 1st to make finish a little easier to work with. :dcrules

I wax that often too. :D

Try wiping it down with IPA ,and if that doesn't do it you may want to try out 3M Ultrafina. It has worked excellent with my paint on the rotary...maybe get the blue finishing pad that is made for it too.
