Vista users

Mr. Clean

The Man Who Knows The Man
CharlesW's laptop thread prompted me to query the membership's computer experiences further. :) I am on the verge of replacing my home system. I am more than likely looking to a "desktop" since I don't forsee the need for mobility and therefore don't want to pay the premium for a laptop. But that is not why I've asked you here. I am looking at o/s. I am currently running MS XP which has not presented any problems for my needs which consist maintly of MS Office apps and internet surfing. My concern is Vista and all the complaints which seem to be made about the problems. Now I understand that there are natural biases against the giant MS so I can probably discount a certain percentage of those complaints but I have to consider that some of the complaints are legitimate. Therefore up to this point I have been considering...yes, the iMac. Cost wise, there is a slight premium over a comparable Dell, but the reported stability of Leopard might make it worth the extra few dollars. From what I've read, there is a compatible MS Office product available.

Any Mac users out there running MS Office? What has been your experience? Does it play well with Leopard?

Vista users, are the problems greatly exaggerated?

I have vista and use it just like you office and internet. Never had a problem and i love the way vista works. It will ask you if a program has your permission for downloading something but i do not find that annoying it only happens if you are installing something.

I love my mac.
From what I've heard (My sister has Vista) much of the problems are with systems that are underpowered. I guess you should have at least 2 GB of RAM and a decent processor, so maybe some of the complaints are from "bargain" systems. She hasn't mentioned any major issues with it so far, but she's had it less than a year so far.

MR Clean - I won't persuade you not to buy a MAC, but if the only reason is to avoid Vista, then don't do it. The problems are GREATLY overblown. My wife and I had Vista on our computers for a year. My colleague has Vista - no problems at all. I think most of the complaints came from people who bought computers which were falsly labeled "Vista ready" when the new OS came out but where not. When those users ran the OS on those machines they were disappointed because they had problems. If you buy a new system today (Core 2 Duo, 2GB Ram) you do not have these problems.
Vista runs very smoothely, but you have to recondition yourself. It is a new OS but most of the new things are beneficial.
When I bought my computer I was saying the same things like you do now. I was very sceptical and would have taken rather XP if it would have been offered. I got Vista and I was very pleasantly surprised.

We have Vista on two computers. It seems to be fine. I know Mac owners love their Macs, though. Once they go Mac, they never go back...

I have a friend that is in the computer repair business and he said that XP will cause far less problems than vista.
If you buy a computer with vista make sure it has a lot of ram because vista is a memory hog and for it to run smooth it needs a lot of ram.

I have 3 Macs and run MS office on all of them without a problem. I also run XP on 2 of them and it runs better on my Macs than on my friends PCs.
