virus!!!

Are MAC's still virus free (or realtively virus free)? I remember reading that the main reason that they hadn't had virus issues was because they are not as popular as other platforms (yet) but I'm not sure how true that is.

Thank you to everybody for their advice so far!

Yep there are only a few thousand viruses known to apple iOS. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses known to windows. I have had a Mac since 2008 and never had a single virus on it. I now have 2 MacBooks and have yet to have a hardware or software failure on either of them. I can't say that about my windows desktops.

Dear Todd, Iomcamaro, & Friends

I've been a provider of Mac-related technical support since 1996. Speaking in very strict terms, there are viruses in our world, but, speaking in more general and practical terms, if you fly Mac OS, you may forget about malware. As our user base grows, we'll probably see more malware, but at the present time we don't have to worry about it.

macs are great if you can afford them. another option is by using the linux operating system. there are a host of free versions available and they are rarely attacked by a virus. they can be installed side by side on a windows system or run using a cd that doesn't require installation to use. i use several versions at home and have never had a virus attack. a lot of free apps also. really great as a back up system.

Can I impose a small MAC Apple Question to you since you are in the know. Who can I view Flash websites or videos on my ipad or iphone 4? I think they will run on the MAC right?

I agree with the recommendations to use Microsoft Security Essentials - it's free, does not bog down your system, and does a good job. As for the Mac vs PC question - let's not go there. All I'll say is that in the years I've used a PC, not once have I gotten a virus infection.

I too was hit with the XP Security 2012 virus. It would not allow me to run Malwarebytes, Superantispyware or even boot into Safe Mode. It was a royal PITA to work around all the barriers it put up in order to delete it.

Todd you should of given me a call Max picked up the same virus . In his case I ended up reformatting his drive one reason I did that was I added another 2TB of storage and another SSD drive . I run Norton on 3 out of 5 of my machines Norton uses the least amount of resources out of them all . If you use the free version of Microsoft's Essentials I suggest also running the free version of Malwarebytes also .

Todd and everyone else: my grandson's machine just had a variant of one of the 2012 viruses and I used this link for instructions on how to remove it. It was a PITA and simply running MalwareBytes and other antiviruses left it untouched; there are other things that need to be done before MB will work. The info on Bleeping Computer is always first rate:

FWIW, I was able to get Malwarebytes to run simply by starting in safe mode. Thank you to everybody for your advice and help!
