virus!!!

Todd@RUPES

Just a regular guy
My computer got hit with the Internet vista security 2012 rogue virus. Luckily I have malwarebytes taking care of the problem but so much for an early night. I know this rogue is designed to make people buy a pseudo program to fix it but imagine if these people spent their creative energy doing something productive. It's frustrating.

Virus's are a pain to deal with and having good security software is essential for personal sanity. I've not heard of this one till now and hope things get better for you sooner than later....:bigups

Thanks Bobby. I ran malwarebytes last night, but it didn't detect it so I have to update the software and I'm running it again this morning.

You can set Malwarebytes to auto update and notify you if it gets really old. The check boxes are in settings. Also there is more to security now days. Have a good active firewall and anti virus software. Even then stuff still will attack you computer. My brother in law hates to change his passwords and got his email compromised xmas day and a few hundred emails got sent out that day to everyone on his contacts list. For individuals that hate to pay for anti-virus software, the companies do provide some of the better ones for free.

I had a similar bug a while back. Malwarebytes didn't find it. SuperAntiSpyware did the trick. Another excellent freebie that I don't mind paying for the registered version because it's cheap and it works!

Conspiracy fan that I am, I'm convinced the antivirus vendors are behind the proliferation of viruses and malware. :wall

The good news is once I updated the Malwarebytes and it found the problem and removed it. So I am up and running, but a couple of hours behind were I want to be with my schedule.

Right now I am running AVG Anti-Virus free but if anybody has a better recommendation I am all for it!

Todd..I stopped using AVG a while ago after it started to bog down my computer after they came out with a new version. I use Microsoft Security Essentials on all my computers. It's free and works great.

I use Emsisoft for my business machines. One software does it all.

For home laptop, MS Security Essentials which also prevents virus and malicious spyware. It's free.

Before your next infection, make a portable virus removal tool (Kaspersky) on a USB thumb drive.

This is where a Mac comes in handy :)

Are MAC's still virus free (or realtively virus free)? I remember reading that the main reason that they hadn't had virus issues was because they are not as popular as other platforms (yet) but I'm not sure how true that is.

Thank you to everybody for their advice so far!

I used AVG when I was a newbie, and didn't know alot about AV software, maturing along the way I found that AVG did not catch alot of the virus's out there. Went thru the usual try this and then that. I found that (it's FREE) version of Avira offered me the best protection. It was lower on memory/system use. The work AV (paid version) we utilize F-Secure. Alot of the other are what I would consider memory hogs. Unless you have alot of memory or a new machine they will slow your system down. IMO

Is this showing up as an update to install? Just want to be on top of things. Thanks for the heads up.

No. It sneaks in when you open a link, watch a movie, etc. My understanding is you can get it pretty much doing anything. I was watching a bootleg concert from a reputable website when I heard the machine kick on that pop-up that I was infected appeared.

i have brighthouse networks as my isp and was surprised to find out that they offer a pay version of "internet security suite plus" from computer associates for free to its customers. auto update, virus scan etc. works great. check your isp to see if they offer something similar.
