Vintage BMW Fest '03

The 3rd annual Vintage BMW Fest was held in historic Hermann, Missouri, the heart of our local wine country. After the mid-morning rain (which kept away some participants) the sky opened to bright sunny day. The Vintage BMW Fest highlighted the BMW 2002, the car that is credited with giving birth to the sport sedan model segment.

They were packaged well, space efficient, comfortable, fast, nimble, handled extremely well and were fun to drive. The most coveted consumer model, the tii, had a high pressure mechanical fuel injected engine, bigger brakes and struts, and other subtle mods. Even today, 30 years later, the tii will give modern pocket rockets a run for their money!

Vintage BMW motorcyles were also at the event. I love the "toaster tank" bikes!

Here are a few pics. (See link at bottom for more) My favorite is the one of this little boy admiring himself in the reflection of the hood of a car! That's his Dad watching him in the reflection of the red hood. Ha! Kodak moment!

BTW...I won Best 2002tii with my red tii! :D

Nice Job and SWEET CAR. I love the styling of the older BMW's and it's nice to see so many in great condition.

My all time favorite BMW is the M6, hardly ever see them anymore.:(

My first new car was a 1972 BMW 2002 Tii, metalic blue with a black interior. I think everyone has a car that stands out in their memory. The car that's associated with a time in their life. We think of that time as being the "best" time in our life. That may or may not be, but the BMW was my car for that time. I paid $5143 for that car, including tax. That car was a blast to drive. sigh...... Wouldn't mind getting one to work on, I still have all the tools and manuals for that car.

Great story, Dave. There were half a dozen cars I didn't get pics of. One was a car that sounded just exactly like yours. Metallic blue and black. This car won the award for Most Original 2002. This car was original and untouched right down to the floor mats. It was incredible. It was showing it's age like a weathered old sailor but complete in every detail. Not bad for 30+ years! Hard to keep a good BMW down. :up

Thanks Brad. I still remember that the shift assembly used to drop every once in awhile and I would crawl under the car to tighten it up. Used to bleed the brakes, the front brakes had three bleed points each! Great car, great memories. I had put Cromadora (sic) wheels on mine, they were made out of real magnesium, very light. I could pick up the whole wheel with one hand. Had to use tubes on the tires cause the wheels were too porus and would leak air.

Ohhhh, but those are very collectible and valuable now! $$$$$ Worth more than some cars they are under!;)

Congrats on the win! :up The first car I ever drove was my Mother's 1974 2002 Tan&tan 4speed with sunroof. I was 14(1978)

Congratulations! I think my wife said it best when she told me "No matter how old a BMW is, it never looks 'old'".

Brad,

What's the story of your 2002tii? I wonder how long you had it and if you did the restoration yourself?

I think I've read before that you drive it daily and wonder how do you keep it looking that good? This is a vintage car after all...

Congrats on the win!

Brad,

That is inspiring! I look forward to 30 years from now when my pampered 2001 325ci will be a "classic".

Until then, I can look forward to the 1972 Porsche 911 S Targa being built for me, which will be a "toy" I plan to enter in similar such Concourse events.

I purchased the car from the original owner who was a serviceman in the US Airforce stationed in Germany. He purchased the car in Munich brand new. It is a full euro spec car. He kept great care of the car and I have all the original records from day one! I was lucky that the car was kept original and was never stripped, cut up or modded like so many are.

I purchased the car almost 10 years ago and stripped the car completely and repainted myself it replacing the rocker panels and front fenders with original new parts ordered direct from the factory. I rebuilt and upgraded all the suspension parts, many engine, cooling and brake components. Most trim and all the interior upholstery and carpet has been replaced.

We do drive the car often. It has a huge trunk so it does the Home Depot hauling and it has roof racks for hauling mountain bikes and gear. The only weather it doesn't see too often is snow and salt. It's a great car! Thanks for the compliments. :o

It's good that there are people like you Brad, these cars deserve to be cared for and kept in pristine condition. The same goes for all true classics.

I recall that when I first saw your car in David's book I said to myself that there are only 2 vintage cars I'd like to own in my life, 2002tii and '72 911 Carrera (RS would be a dream come true).

Brad,

Congrats on the win with your red 2002tii! :bow :bow :bow

To behold a BMW in such great shape, never mind a 2002tii, makes a tear come to my eye!

From one BMW owner to another, again congrats! :xyxthumbs

Cheers,
