Video: Cleaning Wheels Coated With Opti-Guard

Nice video. You cleaned the heck out of those wheels. I'd really would have liked to see how clean they were after just powerwashing.

I may have a clip with just after the pressure washing.... I will check

Jason, what brush did you use to clean the face/spokes?

Hey Richy: I think you are referencing the brush that I used to get between the splits in the spokes. If so, it is a no name handheld wool tool... I got it from Autozone, I have seen them at many stores... If you can't find them in Windsor let me know and I will pick one up for you.

Thanks for posting the video. You are very thorough with your wheel cleaning. I just have to ask though, what is the benefit of Opti-Guard on a wheel if you're still going to spend that much time and effort cleaning it? Isn't one of the benefits of OG the fact that dirt and grime wash away much easier?

Thanks Jason. I will check Autozone when I'm in Detroit next week.

It may not show up very well but the wheels were pretty soiled. Had the wheels not been coated not only would i have had to spend more time cleaning them but I would also have had to use a dedicated wheel cleaner and used brushes that are much more aggressive. All of the tools were soft touch tools excluding the brush that was bent at an angle to get the rear of the spokes. Additionally, these wheels have quite a few areas where dirt loves to hide due to the split spoke design which requires a bit more attention.

Lastly, if the wheels were not coated they would have been significantly more dirty after approx. 500 miles of driving many of which were done in the rain.

Did I just date myself...lol

Only to about.... 2004? So not that bad. Just haven't seen anyone else using or mentioning them in a while. I even still have a spare one new in the package :o

If I used Opti-Guard on my wheels, it would be to add convenience. You did a great job, but this is way more labor than using a bit of A2Z and two brushes, and my way gets the wheel wells and the tires clean as well in less than half the time.

I also have silver painted Enkei wheels, and they got absolutely FILTHY this winter in the snow/slush/crud on the roads. I was able to clean them with ONR without a problem, and they aren't coated with anything.

I guess I just don't understand the benefit of applying a coating to wheels if it's just going to mean more time and effort to clean them.

I could have gotten them "clean" much quicker with much less effort but, they were spotless. I would literally eat off of them without thinking about it. That would not have been possible without a dedicated wheel cleaner (as you mention A2Z). So, no need for dedicated wheel cleaner would be the first benefit that I see.

Additionally, these wheels would have been MUCH more soiled had they not been coated, requiring more time and effort than what was exerted.

Great video Jason.

Something to consider.....Because the coating is not affected by harsh detergents, I use an APC like Power Clean without any adverse affects. It seems to help loosen the dirt to where just my powerwasher removes everything (except maybe the barrels).

Thanks David.. I do keep OPC stocked so I will be sure to try that!
