User Name & Password-Autopia

CharlesW

The Rainmaker
Might just be coincidence, but I just had someone try to get into my bank account, on-line.
I had used the same user name at Autopia and the bank, (and DC, and, and, and.....
Anyway, I am in the process of changing all of my passwords.
Oh, and no they weren't able to access anything.

Man, that's not good! They better take care of that situation over there soon!

On-line banking is still an "iffy" proposition!

My situation may not have anything to do with the Autopia hack job. Could just be a coincidence. I felt it was better to change things rather than take any chances.

Focusedonsound:
When I tried to access my account on-line, I was denied access and given a number to call at the bank.
There had been an attempt to use a debit card on my account and the persons making the attempt didn't have all the numbers correct. They were unable to confirm they were me, (they weren't :)), so the bank didn't honor their request and suspended any activity on-line or by debit card until I called and verified all my information.
The bank did a good job!
U.S. Bank, by the way.

yup...there are virus's that collect info you typing on your computer and sends it back to the hacker...this is a big problem...tough to fight against

Damn! Thank god I have no bank or credit card info stuff. My forum passwords are quite different. Annoying as hell those hackers. Go play with those ppl we hate!

Most of the time it's those emails you get that look like they are from your bank or credit card company asking you to verify your account blah blah blah- you click the link - it looks legit so you enter in your user id and pw - and blammo -

This is why I use a different password for every board I am on now. I got burned once before because I trusted somebody. You just can't trust some people with secrets.

Follow a few simple rules/steps and you will be a lot safer on the internet

1) Never use the same Userid on different sites
2) Never use the same password on different sites
3) Change your password often
4) Get a free Spyware Prog and run it often (auto daily schedule)
5) Get an Anti-Virus SW Prog and keep it up-date (auto)
6) Get a Firewall (Included with most home routers)

1. Guilty. I use several, but not all are different.
2. See #1
3. Never changed any passwords until today.
4. Use Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot regularly
5. Use Norton anti virus regularly.
6. Have both a router and a firewall.

I never reply to e-mails requesting personal info.
I don't open attachments, even from people I know.
I have HTML graphics blocked in my e-mail.
My credit cards have a zero cash advance limit.
I have never carried or used an ATM card.
I have addresses that are phony in my address book in case someone tries to send to all those in my address book. The phonies will bounce so I know it happened. (Never has)
I keep secrets.

The bank thinks the attempt may very well have been a random hit by some type of program that scans a series of numbers.
So far, so good.

I'm thinking there's not enough info available at Autopia to get access to bank accounts. It sounds unrelated to me.

FYI, there has been A LOT of trouble today at an on-line site that acts as a clearinghouse for auto loan applications (I use this site extensively at work, so I have first-hand knowledge of this). This is an extremely secure site, and security was NOT breached, but I know when a site is under attack, and this one was under attack.

In no way was I blaming Autopia. My intended point was to consider changing your password at any site where you used the same one that you used at Autopia.

Oh, understood, understood.

I only use one account for online purchases, and it never has more in it than I need to make the purchase. None of the other accounts, bank or credit, have ever been used or accessed online. I don't do ebay, and I just signed up for Paypal... using that account as my only source for funds.

I've found that to be the least risky way to do business.

Also, consider using pre-loaded cash cards for vacations. There is never more at risk than is on the card. Your credit/debit cards are most at risk when you are on vacation.

1. i use the same ID for most sites, so i wont get confused....
2. i use 3 different passwords, but i have 1 primary password i use for important stuff...
3. too lazy/scared that i may forget the passwrod
4. got that covered
5. got that covered
6. i disabled my firewall, but i have a router. im not sure if i may have diabled my router's firewall too though.......

Do scan your computer for virus and trojans regularly, those things are nasty. some can record everything you type and send it to the hackers.

Zesty-man,

Just out of curiosity, why would you disable a firewall (unless it was a SW based one)? A HW firewall such as one that is included in a home router is totally transparent to the user. It restricts/blocks any incoming access. Any outgoing requests that you initiate are unaffected.

To everyone else:

Many people spend every waking minute of their lives trying to get your UserId and Password, make it as hard as possible for them to succeed.
