Used 3M SMR...swirls got worse??

I applied it after washing with NXT.

Used terry cloth to apply. Rubbed it until I could get it decently dry. Then removed with microfiber.

In the sunlight the areas I applied it to actually look WORSE than before?

Any way to get them back to normal?

I don't own a PC but have a cheap orbital. I don't know what to do. :ticked

Thanks,

I havent had much luck with using the 3m smr. Maybe it is possilbe the towels you are using are not 100% cotton :dunno in theory the edging/stitching of some towels can scratch your paint, because they are not cotton.

Man that hurts when you try to make something better and it just gets worse. I have no personal experience with it but lots of folks report good luck with Meg's ColorX and Meg's ScratchX for hand application.

Another possibility is to try the 3m SMR again. :wha Stick with me for a second. I have been disappointed trying to remove swirls using products that worked for me before. They appeared to do nothing at all or even make things slightly worse - then on the third or fourth pass I got results.

Finally, you might want to ditch the applicator and use a soft terry cloth instead. I find it hard to get the firm, even pressure needed for a polish with a foam-filled applicator pad. Just make sure it's clean terry cloth and you should be ok.

Let us know how it comes out.

could it be that the area that you tried isnt actually worse, just polished and cleaned real well with the smr and the swirls appear worse because the correction isnt completed ? it seems some times that after use of a cleaner or light polish that the paint is so clean and smooth the defects show more ?
keep us posted. :huh

Could very well be that it isn't "truly" worse, but from the looks of it it looks very hazed and swirls are much more apparent. Maybe I should try the 50/50 alcohol water to remove the oils, which could be the cause of the hazing.

I am going to pick up some Scratch X as well because I have heard it is a lot easier with hand applications, and the 3M works better with a PC. Hopefully there will be another nice day here soon and I can get this sorted out before winter. :ticked

I will also be picking up some new terry cloth towels. Not sure where I should get these as the only place I have seen them carried is the automotive section of WalMart, but will be sure to check if they are 100%.

Thanks for all the great info, hopefully it'll work out.

I dont mind the 3m smr. it likes to be worked fast until dry and dusty. so if using by hand that might be the problem. It is very light polish and mucho fillers. Like everyone else has been saying...i dont think its the product, but the technique may be a mismatch.

will i buy the 3m smr again??? probably not, but i'll use it till its gone!
