UPC or AIO, which one is better as a base for UPP?

wifehatescar

My L5-S1 is killing me!
Has anyone used both UPC and AIO as base layers under UPP? Which do you think works better, is easier to use, etc etc. Is it too close to call?

Right off the bat I think UPC is cheaper and obviously it was "made" to be the UPP base. FWIW I have only used AIO under UPP so far.

I have used both under UPP. Both are relatively easy to use and yield excellent results.

I would say UPC is slightly easier to apply and remove. UPC is designed to be used with UPP so maybe the bonding is better? AIO supposedly leaves an acrylic layer, so maybe the durability and/or reflectivity is a little better but I don't know for sure.

Just my 2 cents . . . not very scientific.

I don't mean to offend. I personally don't like AIO and do not understand it's popularity. It is a product that claims long term durability but no one uses AIO as a last step product because we all know that it's protective properties are minimal. Pretty much it is a "popular" German cleaner wax.

All In One does a GREAT job of removong oxidation but NuFinish does a GREAT job of removing oxidation too! At a third or fourth of the price of All In One.

UPC and UPP are a match made in heaven.

Since you're not using either as a LSP, have you thought of ColorX? I find it to be excellent under UPP. It's wonderful synthetic Megs cleaner/wax. Easy on/off. No bonding problems and very good with oxidation. And of course, cheap and widely available.

^ colorX is a great product and can be had @ less than $6 a bottle from Walmart. I quit using it though after I found a thread from Mike Phillips stating that it has "some" caranuba in it. Seeing as I needed a product to use under sealants I wanted something void of any caranuba so I didn't have to grab a different prep product when using a sealant such as Zaino.

I use AIO because I've never found an issue with it. The 33oz container will last a LONG time for the weekend Detailer and I got it for like $27 which I don't consider to be a bad buy for the size, and I can use it under whatever I use...I find the additional protection (no matter how minimal) an advantage over the other products as I feel it will just keep my customers protected and happy for that much longer.

UPC and Poorboys Pro Polish have caught my eye as a money saving opportunity for down the road and I'm sure there's nothing wrong with them but I won't get around to trying them for the next 6 months or so.

Basically this is my longwinded way of saying you'll be happy with either product. If you're looking for "Bang for he Buck go to Walmart and pickup ColorX if you don't mind the small caranuba content.

I have and use both, but for different uses. I like AIO on trim and as a base for some carnaubas(TS comes to mind), but when using UPP, I go straight for UPC. I think it is a great product and since it was formulated to be a base for UPP I feel that it will allow for maximum durability.

UPC is a bit darker and a touch slicker IMO when compared to AIO. Removal of defects is about the same, ease of use goes to UPC IMO. Both will destroy oxidation, but most of their swirl removing abilitites are dependent upon application method/material.

Hope this helps!!!

Do you find using UPC with a PC/polishing pad will remove any and all possible haze from polishes like SSR2.5 or DACP on a black car?

At speeds of about 5.5 and a meguiars polishing pad I think it would handle that just fine. I use polishing pads with both SSR2.5 and DACP so keep that in mind. Using either(DACP or 2.5) with a cutting pad could leave marring that UPC couldn't tackle. I just don't use cutting pads a lot on the PC so I can't comment.

Everybody knows my stance on the power of AIO as a cleaner. I think its pretty well documented that I don't think it does much in the way of a protectant either. That being said, I have never really had the chance to test AIO against UPC as a paint cleaner. However, I have had opportunity to test it as the base for UPP on a well maintained car that didn't really need the cleaning power of either. For my money I think the tip of the hat goes to UPC. I would always prefer to stay with the same brand of cleaner as I do sealant. It just seems to make sense that UPC would be formulated to be better with UPP than AIO would be. I have found that I get a deeper gloss when I use UPC as a base versus AIO. I will always reach for the AIO when a car comes in with severe oxidation, but on a well maintaned car that just needs a pre-cleaner before the sealant, I will reach for the same brand name cleaner as the sealant. That's just me. I still :bow to AIO for cleaning power and I am looking forward to testing UPC to the same extent.

Thanks for all the info...looks like I'll be buying some UPC when my AIO runs out. (shouldn't there be a "spending money" smilie we can insert in situations like these??? ;))

AIO and UPC are both fine products; however, I prefer to use UPC as a base for UPP. It's not a matter of durability as UPC and AIO seem to work equally well as base coats. I just happen to like the overall appearance of the UPC/UPP combo as it seems to result in a glossier look.

I've done UPC/UPP, and its def glossier + shines. My metallic silver had a nice hint of blue.

Jngrbrdman, you're pretty much respected in this neck of the woods. I'm sure a lot of people will be waiting for the results of your experiment.
