Um got some 26 paste...somethings wrong

Hi Everyone,

I picked up some #26 Paste Wax tonight. I openied up the container to check it out.........it looked hard and crumbly!

I took a cotton cloth and attempted to "scoop" some, but I barely got any on the cloth. I took what looked like a dried chip of wax and rubbed it with my fingers and it softened.

It this how the paste wax should be? I was expecting something like a cream in the can, not what resembles somewhat soft candlewax.

Should I return this or is this normal? If normal is there any way I can apply it with a PC?

Thanks,

George

I just ordered some #26 paste wax.....hope mine isn't like this. :(

You better hope it will be like that. :D

Most quality carnauba waxes, like One Grand Blitz or Meguiar's #26 paste, are as hard as rock. This helps you save money by not using too much product... the thinner you apply it, the better. I would get a foam applicator slightly moistened with QD and rub on the wax a few times. That should be enough product for 1/4 of a hood.

Good luck!

Short answer: Yes

But it’s a better idea to use the liquid version, or simply apply it by hand. It should take about the same amount of time and you'll also save some product. Don't forget there will also be less splatter and less clean-up when compared to the work of the PC.

A PC's real advantage is its ability to break down abrasives to a fine polish, necessary to quickly remove blemishes. But when it comes to applying waxes, hand is the way to go IMO.

Get some foam applicators (preferably Viking-HD since they are comfy and a perfect fit for the can) and microfiber towels, and you'll be set.

I like to use a plastic disposable knife and scrape some product out and then use the non serated(sp?) side to spread it on the pad. I do this when using my pc to do the job...doing it by hand you can simply rub the applicator around in the container.

Just curious GFarra, did you get the newer big black plastic tub, or the older one in the flatter tin?

Apparently the newer one is softer than the old one. I have the new type and I wouldn't call it soft or creamy, but it's not candle wax rock-hard either. Not really crumbly except along the edges, but I can imagine it cracking if it were cold (harder) and maybe dropped or squeezed. I take my foam app and just try to "scrub" a little onto it and apply.

Even if it's cracked it should work okay, but if it's totally crumbled and loose I'd say return it. My rule about buying stuff is if I can open it to inspect it first, I will.

Really soft waxes like P21S are softer and not as crumbly, but still not like a creamy paste. I think some cheaper paste waxes I've seen and heard of seem like a stiff toothpaste, but none I use.

samr thing happened to me and i got the newer tub i posted it on the board 3 months ago

I was trying to remember who it was that posted the same experience.

The #26 paste I have (newer, plastic tub version) is also hard and does flake a bit. I got mine from CMA a while back....I wonder if vendors that move allot of product have "fresher" stuff thus not prone to flaking :nixweiss. By contrast, P21s(S100) is very creamy and doesn't flake a bit but lasts less than half as long as #26.

When you dip the foam applicator in the tub you may think your not getting any product on it but trust me, it's there. I've found that one swirl (excuse the use of that word) in the tub is more than enough to do a decent size area. Too much #26 and watch out, you're in for a battle buffing it off.

I bought the plastic can with the applicator inside. The tub was 1/2 full and had a plastic "dish" to separate the applicator from the wax.

I broken down and tried the wax to see if it was okay since it would soften easily in my hand....I just couldn't scoop any out of the can...it was more like scraping it onto the applicator.

Well it applied nice and thin and buffed out easy too! I am now a happy camper again! BTW....I was amazed at how tiny the beads of water were after I sprayed down the applied area.

I know have the shiniest refrigerator in Brooklyn! You didn't think I was gonna use my car as the guinea pig!

Thanks for all your help,

George

Im gonna order my 26 next week, should be able to get paste or liquid here from Meguiars uk. I will be applying by hand which should i buy paste or liquid??

Thanks

I still use both and have found the following advantages and disadvantages of each.

Liquid.

Easiest application if using a maching. Easier to remove. I use it as an interim topcoat if the weather has been brutal on the finish.

But, It's not as durable, and has solvents that on my red car brings up pigment (the paint was not in good condition when I bought it). This lends me to believe that it has something that may be harder on the paint finish over time.

Paste.

If used by hand on a well prepared surface, really, really cheap. Meguiars says you can get 10 applications, but on my surfaces I'm at over 40 uses and still have some product around the bottom edge of the can after 3 years of my #26 . Paste leaves a coat that is durable enough to feel even after 6 weeks. It also leaves a deeper shine, and seems to layer well if 2-4 weeks are left between coats. Color doesn't come up much on the oxidized red finish.

Disadvantage, harder to apply and remove, harder to work with in cool weather, Stains trim more (if rubber Eagle One Tire and Trim Gel takes care if it is applied before you start), not as easy to apply by machine.

I currently have Meguiars #26 liquid, but at least 3 brands of paste waxes. So my preferences have shown themselves.

id like the paste, but as the weather over here is always cold, looks like liquid, maybe i could get both?:D

Cheers

It's actually much easier to apply paste wax properly when it's cooler. I have found a tendency to use too much product when it's warm out. I live in a fairly cool climate (most of the year) and what I have fount to work is to take the wax inside the house where it is warm for a few hours prior to waxing and then wax away. Works for me.:up

I have used mine a couple of times, and it has not even put a dent in the wax, so to use it up in 10 aps, a guys must have to smear it on with a paintbrush or something!

Store it inside your house and only take it outside when you're going to use it.:up
