UK vs US Makita 9227

Is there any difference between these (if I go for the UK I'll be getting the 110v anyway). I've heard that they have different spindle sizes and therefore backing plates can be hard to come by here in the UK.

Other than that I think I'm on the brink of ordering as I'm getting fed up of how slow the PC is when having to correct paint!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

So does that mean it comes with all three or I have to pick which one's best for my needs? If so, which size should I get to ensure maximum compatibility with the detailing side of things?:nixweiss

The UK Makita 9227 has an M14x2 spindle thread, which is basically a 14mm spindle to you and me!

The backing plates you see on the many USA retailers websites will not fit as the USA version has 5/8" (I think) spindle thread.

You can get 14mm thread backing plates from Lake Country in two sizes (6.25" and 7" IIRC)... but if you want any smaller than these your choices are limited unless you find something in the UK. You CAN get a 14mm 'adaptor' so you can use 'The Edge' buffing pads (the pads that don't actually require a backing plate, I'm sure you've heard of them).

Meguiars UK sell a 5" and 6" backing plate (item codes SM125 and SM150). I'm expecting delivery of these two backing plates in the next couple of days, so I can't tell you what they're like for definate, but I'm told they are very good, made by SM Arnold in the USA.

Hi Ben,

The 6.5" backing plate comes with the Makita, I purchased a 4.5" one for use with the Sonus type pads, and I am awaiting delivery on a 5" one from Mark (basically a Meguiars one, which you can purchase from Megs in the UK, you will need to call them up) - the 5" will be useful on my LC pads. In answer to your question, yes you will probably need one of each size, but as I say the Makita comes supplied with a 6.5" so I personally wouldn't buy the 6" plate from meguiars.
