UDM Owners: Beware of power switch when changing backing plates

I am well aware of UDM being too easy to accidentally turn on. Therefore every time I have to hold it in my hands turned off (say to change pads) I put tip of my finger between switch and ON position to make sure switch can not accidentally slide in ON.

Still the other day when I was changing the backing plate that was not enough. Unit got turned on and I got good smack with wrench on my thumb forcing me to drop the unit from a feet or so.

Except for some pain and loud "OUCH!!! SH..!!!" no damage was done to either finger or UDM.

However from that point on whenever I needed to change backing plate I was not trusting switch with any technique anymore and I would unplug UDM's cord from extension cable.

You might want to do the same.

Probably best practice with any power tool.

Very true, but I don't always unplug my PC when changing a pad or when taking it off to go clean it out. Time is money in this industry and I'm not really fond of anything that slows me down. If I've got to untie the power cord and unplug it every time I pull the pad off to clean it then that is going to be a huge pain in the butt. Unless the job requires more power I might just be tempted to use the PC that doesn't slow me down with power switch issues. David seems to be working on a fix for it, so we'll see what he comes up with. :work:

I don't either. Even as I swap stuff out on the rotary, I am saying to myself "wow, if I hit the switch, this could be bad!"

OTOH, I do unplug the circular saw when changing blades. :)
