Trying to relearn this stuff

Hey guys, I have been on this forum for a while but finaly signed up as a member. Great info on here by the way. Couple of questions I have to get started. I am detailing my 98 Black trans am and have been using an older version Snap On buffer. Works well for me but last year I started using the Meguiars 3 step #3 and 9 with the 26 wax with some 3M waffle pads. Since using that setup I have been fighting dry buff marks. I decided to try something different I was sold a new Presta white pad and the Presta SR. The car is a garage queen with extremely low miles and the paint is better than new with the exception of some very light swirl marks that can only be seen in the direct sun or fluresent lights.

My thoughts were to use the Presta SR after a good wash (just has dust from the pollen) with the white pad and then following up with the Meg #26 or a Blue Corral Pink wax. I was also told to move the buffer in one direction and then stop and pull it back and starting again vs going back and forth under power as this is supposed to create friction and cause swirls?? I have never heard of this until yesterday. Any recommendations you guys have please feel free to let me know. Thanks.

Welcome to DC Shawn! :dcrules

So is this Snap on buffer an orbital, DA, or rotary? Also from what I can tell the only real cleaner you listed is Meguiars #9 which is a very mild cleaner. Deep Crystal step 3 is Carnauba wax as is #26.

As far as movements go with the polisher, you should be moving it in overlapping passes in a work area about 18" x 18". First pass you go in a front to back motion and then go left to right over lapping each pass by 50%. Typically you should be doing 4-6 passes dependning on the polish used.

Let us know what type of polisher you have and then post a pic of the paint in direct sunlight if you can. This will help us help you. :D

EDIT: I see now that Presta SR is a cleaner....sorry I hadn't heard of them before. :)

It is not the orbital. I am not sure it is a DA or rotary. It does spin fairly higher rpm's. Sorry for the lack of info I am at work and the buffer is at home. Thanks again for the help.

Also, it might not be Meguirs #3. I know one is the Swirl reducer one is a polish and then the 26 wax.

Is this what your polisher looks like?

#9 is Meguiars 2.0 Swirl Remover...it is still very mild though.

I have been using this rotary for the last 8 years. It has worked well just the old pads I was using are not available anymore and the new 3m waffle pads were causing the dry buff marks.

How long are you working a section? What color are the 3M pads? What RPM's are you working at, how fast are you moving the polisher (arm speed).

Foam pads can heat up fast and too much heat will cause the polish to flash.

You may want to look into a different polish as well.

I like no faster than 1800. Foam pads are like a blackish grey color. I try to use very little pressure and I do move back and forth fairly quickly. I am going to stop using the Meguirs polish all together except the #26 wax. I want to try this Presta SR or the Blue Coral velvet cut I have with the white finishing pad.

Ok, that's their finishing pad used with the perfect-it foam pad glaze. Try bumping down the RPM's to 1000-1200 and see if that helps too.
