Trade work

Last week I had to have dental work have another crown put in at the cost of over 1,300 bucks!

But luckily I do trade work with my dentist and his bill from me was up to 1,100 so we are almost even .

Weve been doing trade work for 9 years now and Ive had more than 3 grand detal work over the years he has let me work off .

Its really such a great deal for the both of us because he loves having his cars detailed and I dont have to stress out about large dental bills.

Anyway thought I would mention it because for over 20 years Ive been doing trades with all kinds people that have saved me thousand of dollars and have been also able to afford things normally wouldnt splurge on .

Just to name a few services Ive done trade work for.........

Chiropractic
Accupunture
massages
dance lessons
auto repair
sterio installation
computor repair
hair dresser
handyman
lawyer
tax accountant

Not to mention the great relationships you develope when trading , its a great way to save yourself some money.:)

Great topic. Cash is nice but when you can swap services such as you do, it is also really nice! This is how the barter system began!
 
I've traded work with a friend before. I re did his headliner and sun visors and he hooked me up on some work I needed done on my car that I couldn't do

It's nice being able to work out things like that and know that it really didn't cost me a dime
 
As nice as this concept sounds, I've done this a few times in the past and gotten screwed in the end, so I don't really entertain the idea anymore.

Thats really too bad Shiney. I guess there is always a potential for the deals to go sour or to have someone flake out on you.

The way Ive usually done this is with people I already know and you gradually build the trust .

Ive been very lucky and never had any bad experiences.
 
Im with Shiney. I always seem to do more work than I receive in the trade or the quality of work that I receive is sub par because its a trade. Sometimes it works out but sometimes its a halfassed job when I don't do anything halfassed.
 
I love the barter system. I to have traded quite a bit. I traded a tire shop and detailed their shop trucks and got wheels and tires for my car. My friend just proposed a trade a few days ago to do his car for a ticket to see U2 tonight in Pittsburgh. I have been burned once or twice but i am cautious now and make sure the trades even out.
 
Yes I'm just now starting to pick up on tradework I've been getting massages and movie passes. I've been trading a $50 detail for an $80 massage :rofl

Thats a shame ......I guess the only way around this problem is have their service first! Then you can give what you think is fair service back.
 
I've done this a lot in the past but not much in the last few years. Though I have had a quite a few offers to swap detailing for web design work, but I honestly don't want a web page right now so I've always passed on those offers.

Yes , the networking is also a bonus!

Im sorry to hear people have had bad experiences with this. I guess just like any relationships you have in life they can be positive or negative.

The best thing to do is feel it out a little and get to know the person and service first and then start small trades and work up from there .And keep the communication strong about whats expected and when.

Its also go by my gut feeling about someone.

Its funny because my dentist is really an untrusting person because he has been burned many times but once he got to know me and we started small trades he just about insisted I pay one very large bill with details .

I think it took me a year to work that bill off!

Now we completely trust another and just take care of each other no matter what the charges are . Its such an awesome relationship to have!

I also comforting to know I wont be getting old and losing my teeth if I cant pay for it:D

You are right, I just got home from the show and it was incredible. Now when its 95 degrees and he wants his car cleaned i have to remember how much fun that i had! We saw the last show on the American tour. There were 60,000 people there. I was not a hugh U2 fan before tonight. I may have a change of heart

Well, you will get old, but you'll have nice teeth. ;)

I traded some van detailing for water sprinklers in my flower beds. I got way more than the detail was worth. :) I'd rather polish, seal and wax than hand dig and install sprinklers.
 
Im happy a lot of you have also had positive experiences with trading! Thanks for sharing!

I feel so incredibly blessed in my life knowing I have services that will allow me to trade work for almost anything I need in life . Its a very comforting feeling .

The nice thing to is I have almost always had people come to me about trading .I didnt even have to look or ask.

Theres only a couple people Ive turned down because I got a bad /uncomfortable vibe from.
