topping something over a qd that contains silicones

Was wondering if it's true that you really can't top something over a quick detailing product which contains silicones. (I've heard that you must first wash it off) Take meguiar's final detail for example. If this is true is this because the product won't bond correctly?
 
What kind of wax are you planning to use, III? If it's a "cleaner wax," then the wax would probably work fine, especially since you'll probably be washing before you wax. (Right?) I think the only products for which silicones are a problem are the sealants (Zaino, in particular).
 
I've been wondering about this too. The CMA website recommends spritzing FI or EO WWS on the pad used to apply AIO or SG. To the best of my knowlege, Wet Wipe and Shine has silicone. At least, it leaves my hands feeling "coated" with something like the other known silicone-containing products.



Even though I was never able to see or feel any difference between Klasse applied with, or over, a silicone-containing QD, I've started using FI with an ounce of Klasse SG mixed in (it's cheaper than Sonus Acrylic Spritz) or distilled water with SG in it (H2O-SG is only for after washing - not as a quick detailer for removing dirt/dust) and the slickness and shine on my car seems indestructible.



(But I have only been using Klasse for a year now. Before that I was an innocent Cleaner Wax user, 2 or 3 times a year. Now I have 28 bottles of detailing products, and the count is rising. Gee thanks, Autopia.)



But that doesn't answer the question, which is: do the silicones reduce the shine or durability of the sealants? I think most waxes and sealants have silicones blended in with them, but I don't think most of them are acrylics like Klasse.
 
NozeBleedSpeed, I don't think forrest's comment was quite as sweeping as you make it out to be. My take would be: if III is going to use one of the commonly-available products (and most of those are cleaner-waxes), then he probably doesn't have to worry about whether or not the QD has silicones in it.



But I think -- and I emphasize that this is just my impression from limited experience and some reading on the Zaino site -- that if he were going to use Zaino, then he would need to be sure there were no traces of a silicone-bearing QD.



I really don't think we can offer much detailed advice until we find out what "topper" III is planning to use.

I wouldn't worry about it, as 99-100% of QDs all seem to contain "silicones" in them.



People tend to read the CMA article and get all hooked on the idea that FI and EOWS are the only things you can use with Klasse, when pretty much any non-carnauba QD will work with sealants, even Zaino, from what I have researched here on Autopia.



The only one I'm not too sure about is Final Detail though, since it's a relative newcomer, and is supposed to contain a lot more silicone I think.... I'm less worried here about silicone itself than I am with the QD competing with the product to sit on the paint. I mean, if you put on a ton of QD, but only used uber-thin coats of something like Klasse SG, I'd have concerns about if it's getting on the paint or not. :nixweiss

I was thinking of topping with a glaze or polymer of some kind. Maybe klasse sg, or something that contains no carnauba. Yes, I'm obviously washing before I wax, but say after I wash the vehicle I notice that I missed a little spot, or say that I notice some dried water spots that I missed when drying. So, instead of busting out the whole hoze and car wash shampoo, I decide to use a qd type of product and just touch up those areas that I missed when I washed it. However, the qd I use contains silicones. I guess maybe I should use one that doesn't huh?

Take the QD you have and make a 1:10 solution in another spray bottle and use this a spot remove. This will greatly dilute the amount of silicone and potential contaminates for your sealant bonding.

Another alternative is just plain water (damp MF). If the water spots resist plain H2O, a 1:4 (1:2 to 1:1 solution for old water spots) solution of white vinegar and distilled water for those post washing recently dried water spots. :wavey
 
No need to purchase a new product for the need III presented. Nevertheless, Clearkote QS is a wonderful product that could find a slot in everyone detailing arsenal. :xyxthumbs
