Topping Klasse / scratch hiding

The Klasse Twins do a superb job of Bling Bling to the 2002 Mazda (no wax topper needed. I have been using carnauba on my badly neglected/scratched up RED 1990 Mazda; but got tired of the shine only lasting a week (paint is badly oxidized). So, I used Klasse last weekend. First time no red paint came off on the towels, and one week later still sparkles. Except for the bazillion "hey look at me" scratches the Klasse brought out. I'm thinking of topping this car with a carnauba, in hopes that some of the scratches will "disappear". Has anyone had any luck with scratc/swirl hiding using this combo?

You could, but most of the time, I believe in, "Do it right, or don't do it all!" Instead of finding temporary ways to hide a problem that will reappear again, why not restore the tired red paint to its original condition? Use an abrasive polish to remove the oxidation and fine scratches in the paint. I would invest in a Porter Cable random orbit polisher and some 3M products.

What carnauba wax are you using? From your description, it seems to contain cleaners, and cleaners strip Klasse. Are you using AIO, SG, or both?

Load up on the SG if you just want to hide them. I've noticed SG is pretty good at taking the edge off those swirls. My wife's car has some areas where the clearcoat is failing, so I am very very hesitant to buff swirls and scratches out. It is also loaded with scratches. I have always noticed SG takes the edge off, but today I clayed, AIO'd, and SG'd her car (I just put on MPPP like 2 months ago, and topped with #26 like one month ago, but I just like using different stuff on her car). Anyway, the scratches really looked reduced, and I can already see that neat Klasse polished glow. A few more layers of SG will help too.

Anyway, it's up to you. I found the scratches more visible with the MPPP and #26 than I do now. You could glaze it and then carnauba, but probably not with the Klasse underneath. Plus, that's such a temporary fix. I've never really noticed glazes to "seal" under wax. The look seems to gradually fade and in a few weeks it is totally gone (though I suppose a glaze with no carnauba would be totally gone in a few days instead).

Just my opinion, but SG is pretty decent at hiding swirls.

I do own the PC 7424, and I've gotten out all the scratches that can be gotten, while still leaving paint on the metal (did I mention that this car had been badly neglected?). I was having some success with the glaze/wax routine, at hiding a lot of these imperfections, before going to the Klasse regimen instead.

As to your second question, I haven't tried topping the Klasse with wax yet. That's why I'm asking for other's results on such a finish.

Like Aurora40 says, SG is very good at hiding marks. I've found benefits in up to about 6 layers of SG, applied over the course of a week. The topper--in my case P21S--doesn't help hide anything, and of course once you have topped you are back to square one if you are still unhappy.

Since you have a PC, why not get rid of them? Start with some Megs DACP with a cutting pad, then migrate to a polish pad. Since it cleans and polishes, you could go straight to Klasse or continue with more polishes or glaze to really bring out the mirror shine. 3M PIII-MG or Megs #3 MG (very fine) or Menzerna FP all with a white polish pad. Then apply the Klasse and enjoy the mirror reflection!

I've done the Fine Cut, the DACP, etc. routine, and improved this car greatly. However, SO MUCH paint comes off onto the pad when trying to remove these scratches (ie: too deep+clearcoat failure+oxidized paint). I suppose I'm not explaining myself clearly enough, so let me try again:

The polish/glaze/carnauba routine worked well enough at removing/hiding scratches, but it really removed a lot of paint, and it only lasts a week or so. So far, the Klasse has lasted 8 days, and still shines. But them darn scratches are _really_ evident, now. I'm just asking if there is anything you could put on "after" a sealant, that would reduce the appearance of scratches (in this case optically, as a glaze does).

Thanks for any recommendations

Aurora40 and BoxterCharlie,

I have 2 coats of SG on thus far, and I will continue to apply. From a distance, this LittleRedJewel looks stunning. Just don't get too close. ;-)

Jeff,

If you are worried about removing more paint with the glaze cover-up, just use a pure glaze like Meg's #7 or #3 or #5 or Hand Polish or something. They shouldn't remove paint, and should fill in your swirls temporarily. But as you noticed, they don't last very long. But you should be able to do this without more paint removal as long as you get the right tool for it.

As far as stuff on top of Klasse, you could try one of these glazes, but not sure how well that would work for hiding or how good it would be for the Klasse. But I think you'll suffer from the same problems with it fading away after a week or so. And I doubt a carnauba on top of Klasse would really hide any more than a carnauba not on top of Klasse.

It seems to me your options consist of either glazing pretty frequently since they don't last, or piling on the SG to help minimize the appearance of them. Sorry if that's not much help, but I don't think anything will hide them on top of the Klasse for weeks to months anymore than it would without the Klasse in the equation...
