Today's detail - live & learn

thanks all of you guys!

Forgot to say that he made the check out for $150

1 - he found me through my website - getting some new business that way ! :up

2 - It was an *extra* $150 in my pocket, but learned not to agree to the final price until I see the car. I guess if Scottwax was burned a few times I am ok. :) Learned my lesson. :D

3 - I would have charged $300.00 for something like that. I do not take $130 jobs. I charge alot normally.

TW85 HHI - he wouldn't say.

Mizzuri - you are right and as I said above, I charge accordingly. I don't mind driving 30 miles and find a similar car and not take the job. (I kind of wanted to detail :D) I have some other details lined up but they have to be done sat/sun (weather has been too cold.

hirosh - No final price until I see the car.

detailbarn - One of the ladies called me yesterday and wanted a $130 detail on his husbands black Cherokee that is filthy inside and wanted a wash & wax with that. Needless to say I'll decline tomorrow.

01bluecls - he lives in Leesburg. Just stay in touch and we can meet up.

JBM - agreed!

GoodnClean - agree with you. Should have heard my girlfriend when I called her at 5pm on the way home. She was really upset that I was only paid $150 for 8 hours of work.:o

Scottwax - Makes me feel better knowing that you have had it happen.

Rollman - thanks! The owner was gone when I finished. He left when I was still polishing with ssr2.5 but seemed *relieved* that the shine was coming back and complemented on it.

usdm - yes it was a bargain, but I doubt that he will ever call me back. He drove away in a New silver Jeep. I think he is a very cheap person. Just my gut feeling. But you never know. His next door neighbor has a new Honda element, but when I inspected the paint i saw that the whole car has overspray on it. Turns out that at his job there are some constractions going on. I don't think I want the job though.

hadboosttroy - I agree with you.

Gonzo - :)

wblynch - walk away is correct!

GoodnClean - Thanks Steve! That meant alot.

I will really make an effort to advertise starting very soon.and see how much I can grow this business. My girlfriend would like that since she is not crazy about me massaging.

TDMAN - right!

GSRstilez - thanks Sean - Folex is awesome so far.

gav'spurplez - yes they were.

UPDATE

1

My girlfiend's Sienna was washed last night with FK1's shampoo. #118 - very nice product btw.

Last time I washed it was before Xmas It has Natty's 3x and 1 coat of #16 on it. Paint feels very smooth and slick, water sheets off of it like crazy. It was very easy to dry. Still very shiny!

2

I picked up an account not too far from here to wash 5 cars every week (the 6th van is being painted right now and will not be ready for a few more weeks) for a *high end* carpet cleaning company. Just wash. (qew)

Thanks for reading!

If you want some pointers or ideas about marketing shoot me a PM, I'll be happy to help. This is what I do and I usually charge a lot of money for it so get on the free train! :D

There's definately a shortage of detailers that do good work around here, you can do very very well. Its just a question of finding your niche that you're going to work through, leveraging your sphere of influence and growing a business of repeat customers and referrals. You can get to the point where you wont have to look for clients anymore, you'll be turning them away. Got to look at it from a time is money standpoint, you do good work and do it for the right kind of people and you won't get any arguments about your prices.

Congrats on the wash client thats great! Thats a good way to do business too, I had some talks with a local Geeks on Call outfit to detail their PT Cruisers regularly I was actually going to hire some people to do it but it fell through. Thats part of the game though. I had a deal with a car dealership too to do new car prep that would have been very profitable, but that didn't work out either. Getting in with a company that will respect your hourly rate as an experienced professional is hard. I had that dealership ready to pay $85 a car for 2 step exteriors and a quick interior at 150-200 cars a month. That woulda been a sweet deal... they got cold feet and decided to pay their porter $5 an hour to do it though
