Tire dressings: Wolfgang vs DP

I need to order some tire dressings, because the ones I currently have suck. I have narrowed my selection down to either:

Wolfgang Black Diamond Tire Gel

or

DP Gloss Tire Gel

Anyone have any experiences with these? I am sure both will look fine, I am more concerned with how long they last.

Thanks for any info :)

have only used the wolfgang...good stuff. water based. put on thinly with tire applicator. wait 10 minutes, gently wipe off excess or add another coat for more gloss. i will put on and let it sit overnight which will reduce slinging. lasts about two weeks.

one bottle lasts you a long time.

I've seen the results of Black Diamond - it seems like really good stuff...durable and, depending on how it's applied, it offers a variety of finish, from matte to snot. :D

I don't want to muddy the waters for you here, but whenever I see a dressing thread, I have to mention Zaino Z16. This stuff is just ridiculous. I apply two very light coats and then follow with a dry MF buff for a matte (but very black) finish. The durability is remarkable. FWIW...

I have some of the Wolfgang but it has been a long time since I used it. IIRC it looked pretty good but the durability doesn't stick out in my mind so it must not have been much above average.

The longest lasting tire dressing I have used is the Ultima Tire & Trim Guard Plus:

Ultima Tire & Trim Guard Plus | Automotive Bumper, Rubber, Plastic Trim Sealant

It is a bit expensive but I bought my bottle when they had a sale and it seems to last at least 8 weeks or more on my daily driver. The gloss will die down but the tire remains a nice black color.

I will agree with VroomVroom about the Z-16; I've yet to see a tire dressing that looks better. If you clean your tires well before the first use the durability seems to increase after more applications. That is what I use on my street rod and if I could only own one tire dressing it would be Z-16.

Yes, the Z-16 will last through some rain, but it is a water based dressing so don't expect miracles.

For almost all dressings I use an Eagle One tire swipe and apply one coat to all 4 tires. I then move the car a foot or two and apply a second coat and let it dry. Moving the car prevents you from having a dry spot on the bottom of the tire because it was next to the pavement.

anyone got a comparison with surf city pro tire dressing? heard good things about it although i still have about 1/2 bottle of wolfgang

Echoing John's comments on Z16's durability through rain. It offers the best of the water-based products I've used. My previous benchmark on this was Poorboy's BnB. I still really like that product, but it doesn't quite match the look or durability of Z16 in my experience. Plus, Z16 looks outstanding on smooth wheel wells and most exterior trim pieces.

I ended up ordering Zaino, because I always wanted to try their leather in a bottle stuff.. Figured I am paying for shipping so might as well get more out of it.... Thanks for the help.

What's the correct method of cleaning the tires before applying the dressing?

I've been going back and forth between Megs APC mixed 4:1 and Eagle One A2Z that people have been talking about. Spray on your cleaning solution, let it dwell for a bit, and then I scrub like crazy with a brush. Depending on how dirty the tires are, you may need to repeat this a couple of times, or until you stop seeing the "brown" come off. Getting your tires really clean is crucial for the tires to have that deep, rich black color once dressed.

I'm dying to try Z-16. After seeing it in person on John's (Eliot Ness) street rod, I'm convinced that it's the best looking dressing, IMO. There are a couple that are close, but Z-16 is really tough to beat.

Like Casey (EisenHulk) mentioned use A2Z or a good APC and a brush. Once they're clean and dressed they are much easier to keep up with just your normal car wash or perhaps some Dawn.
