This door thing makes a loud noise...what can i do?

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about. It's not the hinge.

Whenever I open or close the door, it makes a grinding sound. On the flat bar in the picture, there is not any grease on the edges of the bar; obviously something is scraping against that spot.

I've put several applications of lithium grease on the bar and just inside the door, but it didn't help. The grease would just be scraped clean in the same spots.

I took the two screws out that go into the door directly above and below the bar. Now it doesn't make noise, but the door opens with less force, so someone might open the door a little too fast now. Other than that, I have yet to find any other disadvantages of taking the screws out.



Does anyone know how to get rid of the noise? Any ideas, I'll try them.
 
That's the door check strap (or at least, that's what Mercedes calls theirs). Once they start making loud noises, the only thing to do is to replace it. It's typically an easy job, and the parts aren't expensive.
 
OK. But how do I get my door panel off to replace the part? I can find a screw in the door handle, but nowhere else. I know there's more than one screw.
 
No, there probably aren't any more screws. Take off the armrest via screw(s) - one in the finger recess as well. The panel is held on by what they call Christmas tree clips or buttons. If you aren't carefull during removal you will ruin them and although you can get replacments at Napa, ect. they aren't cheap ($1.00 each). Use a wire stripper, needle nose pliers or even a putty knife to insert at each clip location (probably about 15 around the edge of the door) to pry out of the hole. Slide the tool along the edge of the panel about 1½" deep until you hit something. That's the clip. Pry towards you and it will pop out of the hole.



Reinstall is just pushing them back into the holes.
