Thin/old paint - Polish and CW?

My car is 11.5 years old and on the original paint job. Its a solid Dark Green - BRG. Now im pretty sure that thanks to the previous owner the edges are telling me the paint is now very thin. (a suggestion of whitish edges on the boot/trunk etc)



Basically im worried about using anything that cuts too much as there is not much left to cut.



My new schedule involves Wash,polish,clay,CW,Wax



ive only used the CW (#6)once but between it and the polish felt I was loosing a lot of green (no clear coat)



Is this a recipe for disaster? how abrasive is #6.



Also the Wax im using is MGC Liquid wax - have i got it wrong and this is also abrasive?



Please give me your thoughts.

Are you sure the white bits are not dried old wax?



For your schedule, I would wash, clay, polish and then wax.



What is CW and MGC?
 
I think he is talking about Cleaner Wax and Gold Class.



I am with Lowejackson. If you see white, the paint is not going, it's gone. Have you tried to remove the white with alcohol, or just a paint cleaner, to see if it's old wax?
 
The most aggressive thing *I'D* use on thinning single-stage is Autoglym's SRP. Applying it *GENTLY* can make it virtually non-abrasive, BUT applying it with some elbow grease can make it MORE aggressive, so be careful.



Then keep it sealed/waxed so you don't have to risk more damage any more than necessary.



I have a few spots on our Volvo where I can see the factory primer...they haven't gotten much, if any, worse in over 2 years with the SRP/wax regimen and it's parked outside.

Always remember, your application material plays a very important factor to the abrasiveness of a product/procedure.



Applying a product using a soft foam applicator pad is much less aggressive/abrasive than using piece of 100% cotton terry cloth towel.

Ive always assumed the worse - it does look like a warn thin edge - but it only seems to be on the boot.

I have to admit that im now totally confused!!!

I dont now know weather to use the paint cleaner, clay bar or polish (slightly abrasive) in which order. Then can I use the EG and follow with Wax layers (which I now have to replace as ive realised I have MGC which is for clear coat finishes).



then ive read one of the other threads which talks about pure polishes.



I was looking forward to Saturday as im spending it on the car.

Now however im not sure what to do.





Please can someone set me right brfore i make a nice shine then ruin it with the wrong next step?



Is there a guide to single stage (single coat?) paint detailing somewhere

RoadsterChinsk - You could cover the thinned areas with masking tape and just give them a VERY light pass after you've done your "regular" work on the rest of the car.

I would really try a test to determine if it is wax or it is a paint issue. As for the rest of the car, wash - clay- polish. I am not confident Extra Gloss will bond without the Super Resin - the Gloss is designed to work ontop of a layer of Resin.



It is a bit confusing but Super Resin is a polish and a sealant. So wash - clay - Resin - Gloss.
