neighbor spilled some gas in his work van with about 1" thick carpeting...it has an area of about 3x3' where it was spilled

i am concerned about using my HWE, so what are my options to clean it out...cant really drive it without getting light headed...

I wouldn't be concerned about the thickness of the carpet. At least, not in the context of planning your attack. It may take about three applications to get the carpet completely clean.

Because it's gasoline, you need something that will break down that chemical. A degreaser is just the ticket. If you use a heavy degreaser, you may need to follow up by shampooing the carpet once or twice to fully extract the carpet fibers of the foam.

I know David Fermani is something of an expert when it comes to interiors. I'd be interested to hear his take.

We don't even mess with gasoline spills anymore. We remove the affected materials and replace with new. Gasoline in my opinion is almost impossible to completely remove without replacing the affected materials.

thats what I told him...plus I didnt want to use my extractor and ruin that...

It's not the ideal fix for most of the jobs we see but in 15 years I have never ben completely satisfied with the results of trying to clean gasoline out and I have literally tried everything including gutting the interior and pressure washing out the carpets. I usually do up an estimate and have the client contact their insurance company to make a claim. These jobs tend to get pricey.

Put a fan next to the carpet outside, and turn the fan on for a few hours. The gasoline should evaporate away, then put down some baking powder and vacuum.
