Therapy Session In Progress... gotta vent (LONG)

sometimes, it just DOESN'T pay to leave the house!

Went to an obscure store in Hollywood this morning to track down some unique, natural (rubber) linoleum flooring to do a custom/inlaid install in the kitchen. I parallel parked out in front, taking the last spot before the light- no one to park in front of me & easy exit.

Anyways, I'm BS-ing with the guy at counter when we hear this loud squeal of rubber out front, as someone slams on the brakes. We both cringed & waited for the impending crash, though none materialized. So... we continue with our conversation. A few minutes later, someone sticks their head in the front door & asks "does anyone in here own a green Saturn Vue?"

Immediately, a giant lump formed in my throat. So, I sheepishly say "yah" & they reply "well someone just hit your car & I think they're leaving". I walk out to the curb, expecting the worst. First thing I see is that a door mirror scraped about 12" along my door panel & continued (another 12") across the fender blister of the wheelwell. I was upset, but not devastated. It looked like it would probably buff out.

Apparently, an elderly gentleman had to stop quickly for the light. The girl behind him then followed suit, but slammed on the brakes & veered to the right- clipping my car. Neither wanted to involve insurance companys, of course... a late 80s Camry beater & a trashed Daewoo Lanos.

The two of them were already (aggressively) arguing over whose fault it was & I couldn't get a word in edge-wise. This girl had a LOT of attitude. Finally, I'd had it, threw out my arms (TIME OUT!) & said " I just need to know whose car hit mine"... the girl said hers did, but that the gentleman caused her to hit my car. I told her I didn't care WHO "caused" it, just which car hit mine. Told them I was not involved in who caused what or whose fault it was, but since her car hit & damaged mine, I wanted her license & insurance information. She refused, saying that she wasn't giving out that information. The gentleman wasn't have any success with her either... she was VERY uncooperative. During the ensuing argument, she alluded to being a tourist & that her car was a rental. I said "well you DO have a driver's license & rental contract with you, don't you?" She still wouldn't produce it. She said "LOOK... it just a little scratch, it'll come right out... it's nothing" The gentleman was being quite amicable about the whole thing. We exchanged information while the girl went back to her car for something. The gentleman said he didn't want to involve the insurance company, but if it came to that, he understood my position. He opened his wallet to show me his insurance card. The girl saw this from a distance & then runs up & starts accusing us of striking some kind of deal behind her back.

So, we all go another few rounds of arguing. I told them both I wanted both their information... that yes, it may just buff out, but if there's steering/suspension/brake/bearing damage (it is FWD after all), that's another matter. So then the girl goes off again... "look, it's just a little mark... there's no other damage... do you know ANYTHING about cars?"

Oh honey... don't EVEN go there. I've been working on and detailing cars longer than she's been alive. I'm a licensed professional engineer & a subject matter expert in metallurgical failure analysis. I REALLY had to bite my tongue.

She took some pictures of my car, gave me a name & suspiciously local (for a tourist) phone number- both probably bogus, & said she'd send me a copy of the pictures. Then, got in her car & left.

I spoke with the gentleman a few more minutes before he left... he was apologetic & cooperative.

When it was just me & my now-tarnished baby, I started looking again. That's when I noticed the scrape on the lower wheelwell & all the scrapes on the alloy wheel. OK... now I'm heartbroken.

Went to a convenience store a few doors down. Luckily they had some disposable cameras for sale. So, documented everything before I moved the car.

Started to worry after I saw the wheel damage, so decided to call my insurance company immediately. They confirmed that I should only be concerned with the driver whose car hit mine... that swerving/veering to avoid an accident didn't mean the girl could hit/damage another.

It drove ok on the way home... no pulling or squealing or anything, but stopped by the dealership to have them check it over.

What really floors me is that the gentleman was willing to help out, even though he didn't even hit my car. I get home & HIS insurance company calls me with the claim information. I asked if his claim was a result of my insurance company contacting him (since his was the only information I had)... she said no, he contacted them on his own.

I'll just REALLY be PO'd if this girl gets off somehow. Does no one take responsibility for their actions any more? I really should've called the police. This "nice guy" thing is a curse. The insurance companies were both quite accomodating... telling me not to beat myself up over it. I was just so flustered, I didn't quite remember everything I was supposed to do in this situation (first time).

So now my baby is no longer perfect :bawling:

and I'd gone to such pains to keep her that way... the weekly 2 hour baths... keeping the wheelwells scrubbed clean & the engine and door jambs wiped down. It lasted 20 months & 12,000 miles.

Yea, I know... I've gone off the deep end... it's just a freakin Saturn. I've had much nicer, much more expensive cars. But still... I bought it new with 34 miles on the odo & it's been immaculate ever since- the paint was as close to perfect as you can get (for GM paint- lots of orange peel), & there wasn't a single scratch, dent, or water spot on it. Even my beaters have received regular washing, waxing, & preventative maintenance. I had an ultra-rare, low-mileage '98 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC (1 of 117) that I eventually sold because I never drove it for fear of getting it banged into.

OH YEA... gotta give props to the guy at the store. I had talked to this guy for a grand total of 10-15 minutes tops. Really nice guy. He stood out there with me through the whole ordeal, brought me a pen & paper to write down information, & told me where to get a disposable camera to document everything. :thx

So... will have to break out the clay, the PC, & an assortment of cleaners & compounds to assess the damage. It's been my experience that the Saturn has a thick, hard clear coat so hopefully I can get it out. Am less optimistic for the alloy wheel.

moral of the story... never parallel park on Santa Monica Boulevard.

should've stayed in bed...

You DID get the license plate of the woman that hit you, didn't you? If you mentioned that, I didn't see it. Calling the police would have been the best thing if she wouldn't give up her info. I had someone in a landscaping truck rear-end me years ago, plow hitch went thru my spoiler--the driver wanted to give me $500 to forget about it so he wouldn't get in trouble with his boss. Fortunately, I refused, and he gave me all his info. I got to work and saw that the sides of the car were buckled in! Turned out to be a $3000 repair.

yea, I wrote down the plate number. Her attitude really irritated me tho. No apology or anything. I guess I expect too much. Wish I knew what transpired before I walked out there.

Now I'm worried about what will show up on a CarFax & how that will affect value come trade-in/sell time, since I contacted my insurance company.

This event has furthered my desire to pick up a beater to drive whenever I go into L.A. Maintaining 3 vehicles is a pain, but having my "good" cars systematically destroyed is not very appealing either.

Sorry to hear of your adventures, but glad that it isn't any worse!

I'm guessing that you could still contact local law enforcement and explain the situation and see if they can help any. With her tag number, they should be able to help provide insurance information. Might depend on the cop you talk to, so good luck with that!

So far as your concerns with CarFax, I wouldn't worry too much. I don't know how they track things, but it's inconsistent at best! A few of my findings with them: A car I used to own was rear-ended causing over $4000 to a $12000 car. Police report, insurance claims, etc. and the car still checked out clean over 3 years after the accident! I also used to buy & resell used law enforcement vehicles from both the NC Highway Patrol & local agencies & guess what? NONE of those cars showed up as government / fleet / police use on the CarFax reports!!! Finally, a friend of mine just bought a used work truck. Prior owner told him the only damage ever done to the truck was that some kid rear-ended him at a light, not even enough to replace the rear step-bumper and yet that collision (police report but no insurance claim) shows on the trucks' CarFax history! CarFax is a good tool if you're shopping, but DON'T TAKE IT AS THE GOSPEL!

Good luck on getting things straightened out there. Maybe post some pics in "Click & Brag" if all turns out to suit you!

AMEN TO THAT!!! I actually live in LA, and let me tell ya, if it weren't for my work van, my personal vehicles would be dented/dinged/scratched to all hell!

Slick, nothing law enforcement can do (at least now), from what i'm told, they usually just facilitate the exchange of insurance information if no one is hurt in the accident. Although, if the girl was being cagey, they could have put her into her place.

Sorry to hear about the accident, I got rear-ended a few months back, and I know the feeling of having your precious baby hurt. My SUV has never really driven the same since!

Good luck!

Since you have her license plate number, you could give it to your insurance company and they could investigate and probably track down who the car is registered to (rental co. or individual). If it was a rental, then contact the rental company and find who rented that car at that time. Once you have that, you'll know who to file the claim against. Also in your favor is the older man as a witness. Good luck!

oh... it'll probably NEVER suit me. Touch up paint is NOT an option I'd consider. Repainting the panels is a dicey proposition- trying to match color, flake composition, & texture. Even panel replacement poses potential mismatch problems- so it'll never look as good as it did again.

Although... I've been successful at removing a few defects in the past. Shortly after I bought it I cut the wheel too hard & dragged the front corner through the bushes along my driveway. Took me about 3 hours of rubbing (by hand), but I managed to get it all out. Hopefully, the PC can work a little magic.

Gastonia, eh? I lived in fabulous Mount Hollywood for about 5 years, whilst working in Charlotte. Was always a hoot to go into the Gastonia Walmart on Saturday nights when all the folks from the country would come into the big city. I sure miss the proximity to great mountain biking along the river. I miss that area, though it seems like a lifetime ago.

Yea, I figured that LAPD couldn't do much. They've got bigger fish to fry. I stopped in & talked to the desk officer at the sherriff's dept. in WeHo, & he pretty much echoed your sentiments. That's when I called my insurance company.

I tried to be the nice guy, holding my temper AND my tongue so as not to come off as the stereotypical LA *******. The "voice of reason" fell of deaf ears. It was apparent in the first 5 minutes that trying to reason with them would get me nowhere. I should've just called the police & been done with it- though I don't know that it would've changed anything. I'm sure it was quite the show for the passersby though... your typical streets-of-LA multi-ethnic shouting match, replete with accents & broken english. Pity the poor whiteboy that gets in the middle of this. Uh... that would be me. :sosad

I would have called the cops DURING the incident if there was ANY indication of non-cooperation from either driver.

Similar thing happened to me, girl rear ended me at a left turn (light turned green, but no left arrow and cars were coming from the other direction, she decided to stomp on it anyways), no damage that I could SEE (no idea how that happened, I think her license plate nicely lined up with mine lol), but I still wanted her info just in case... She wouldn't give it.... I called the cops, she began to drive off just as the cops arrived and thought about it and stopped.

Turns out she didn't have insurance on the car (yet, apparently... she had bought the car recently but wasn't smart enough to get insurance yet) and she didn't have her license with her.

2 tickets for that.... hah

It made me feel like things were right with the world.

I don't play the whole "don't get insurance involved" game. Too many ways for someone to squirrel their way out of responsibility. Unless they are going to offer me a large wad of cash on the spot, I'm taking their information and calling my company with it. It's not about being a nice guy, it's about protecting your own butt in a world of crap.

Regardless of how small the damage was and that no one was hurt it's always best to call the police. I am not going to pontificate because you're obviously a smart guy and I am sure this will turn out fine in the end, but in cases like this even though the police can't do anything with regards to settlement, they will facilitate the exchange of information, and probably would have made the entire situation a lot less stressful.

Sorry it had to happen; I absolutely know how you feel, just be glad that when all is said and done odds are good you'll be happy with the result.

I learned my lesson long ago about not involving the police. Elderly couple (60+) rear ended my car while i was stopped at a light. Old guy asks if we can NOT involve insurance companies and cops I said fine, didn't look like more that $500 damage to my rear bumper.

When it came time to get the money, i never got a call back (it was a legit #), letters were returned unopened ( I knew i had the right address because I drove by and saw his car in the drive). This is what I got for my willingness to cooperate..........NEVER AGAIN. Now it's only about cops and insurance companies UNLESS they can plunk down $5K cash and trust me to turn the change.

well, like I said, I stopped by & talked to the desk officer at the West Hollywood Sherriff's department, since they were only a few miles down the road. He told me they wouldn't have sent someone out unless there were injuries.

Update: talked to the guy handling the claim for my insurance company. Said he talked to the girl & that she said she was just a WITNESS. Yea, right. If she was just a witness, she wouldn't have been so hostile toward me & the other guy. Plus, when I asked them whose car hit mine, she said "well, I did, but it was HIS fault- HE caused it."

She's really layin it on thick. Keep diggin that hole, baby...

Sry for your car, just be glad it wasn't like my situation where a drunk driver totaled my truck (in 7 thousand dollars in damage, truck’s blue book is 5 thousand) because he was pissed off at the world. He didn't have insurance and I didn't have full comp but I did have uninsuranced driver insurance but I soon found out it was for medical. The drunk driver is broke, does not work so I have to pay to get my truck fix my self.

Get an attorney and take him to claims court. Even if he is broke, if he ever works you might be able to get his tax refunds. They might be able to place a garnishment on his wages, and maybe you can even get a lien on any assets he has until your debts are repaid. It would at least be worth talking to an attorney, because laws vary from state to state.

I don't know how it happened :secret but someone squirted lighter fluid in his car and BBQ'd it.......well I assume it was lighter fluid, i wouldn't know 100% :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

If you did this.. you are an arsonist... and put my Brothers in the LAFD at risk.

Real nice.... :angry :bat

Well, yesterday, my insurance company said they couldn't do anything more... That neither the older gentlman nor the girl were answering calls or returning messages, & that my best bet was to file a hit & run report with the police & take her to small claims court. Of course, this assumes we can track her down.

I really don't know if it's worth the time, trouble, & expense... which is probably what she's counting on, I'm sure. That would be one prime motivation... to see her go down in flames, & learn a little lesson about personal responsibility. I probably wouldn't be so hell-bent on exacting revenge is she had been a little less nasty, hostile, & condescending.

Seems there's precious little incentive to be a decent person any more...

no more Mr. Nice Guy... it's a definite character flaw in America today.
