Crude oil prices are NOT set by the oil companies or evil gray haired, old men conspiring in the board rooms of Texas companies. The prices we pay are set by those who trade this commodity in the financial markets all over the world. Oil is a commodity like cotton, oranges, and copper. The price is set by supply and demand as well as world events, even weather patterns (record freezing winters and hurricanes). The MASSIVE thirst of oil coming from India and China, not to mention America's own addiction also significantly aid in the price of oil which affects gas prices / home heating, etc... We seriously need to cut back on our own consumption and significantly decrease our demand. That means getting soccer moms out of Ford Expeditions and half the other people who drive SUV's but have zero need for them besides the fact they have the right to own one. It comes with consequences.
Furthermore, regarding the price of gasoline, there is a little organization known as OPEC (our buddies in the Middle East) who helps to set the price of crude oil. What you pay as the pump per gallon - almost HALF goes to them. The next largest chunk goes to pay excise taxes and sales taxes on the federal, state and local levels. Then there is refining (making the gas), distribution (transportation) and marketing costs. Then the local station needs to make a buck too. All these factor into the price of a gallon of gasoline.
It is easy to vent towards the people "we" hate (the administration and oil companies). We need a whipping boy. Who cares if facts stand in the way! We can hate the Bush energy bill that gives tax breaks to oil companies. We can hate the oil companies for the horrible impact on the environment they cause. I know I have major problems with oil companies based on this. But people need to understand the MULTITUDE of reasons why oil and gas prices are the way they are and all the other players besides the oil companies who sets these prices.
If anything, we should support building more refineries creating more of a supply. That's an issue where oil companies are caught with their pants down. That's where the argument of deregulation (long before the Bush admin.) comes into play with higher prices coupled with no new refineries by the oil companies.
I'm not defending or bashing the administration, but this is a very detailed subject and the typical, regurgitated, blanket political statements are dopey.
Halliburton (a qualified, mega billion, highly diversified corporation which has been in business for 87 years LONG before Cheney) can afford to pay a certain number of security forces a $100k because they are a private company with the money given to them to do so. If it wasn't them getting the contract some other private company would get it and be able to pay $100k a head. You want to pay every state employed police officer a $100k, then raise taxes to cover the cost. While you're at it, you can pay every teacher a $100k too.
All companies make out like bandits from government contracts including minority and women owned businesses.
