The proper way to introduce a name change?

Five Star

Since I'm doing a major expansion (and investment) in my business, branching outside of just vehicle detailing.

I would prefer to change the business name to incorporate all aspects of my services.

Rather than just start using the new name, would it be best to use both?

Can I add something to the effect of: My current name as a division of my new name?

this one has me stumped on the proper business etiquette.

What was your previous type of busines and what is the future type going to be. A lot depends on how well known your original name is and if it's important to your clientele and if they are still going to be doing business with you. A lot of times you can introduce a new name by including in smaller lettering "formerly known as ........".

Currently Five Star Detailing, 99% of my business is through word of mouth, which keeps me busy enough. but i do have many business card out in the area, that random people ask for, customers paa out and so forth

I will be adding several other automotive appearance services, which has drawn enough demand from my current clients to be worth the initial investment.

I am still on the fence about which name would be selected, but it would encompass all of the appearance packages including the detailing.

I just wouldn't want to scare potential customers away by the name change when they call.

it's just how I feel, that I need to be considerate of these people.

Pick up a copy of 'Creating your Own Sharper Image' Sharper Image .

Not only does it have a number of good business ideas, it goes through the creation of the name Sharper Image (basically, Richard was selling copier toner and paper under another name and wanted to be able to branch out, so he chose a name that would cover anything). So yes, you can change your name if you do it the right way (Who thinks 'Sharper Image' and realizes it was originally a copier supply?).

And honestly,it's just an interesting story about creating a billion dollar company. Lots of little tips you can pick up on marketing.

How about just going with 'Five Star'? Then you could extend the name of your business to include something like; 'Five Star Auto Detailing', 'Five Star Boat Detailing', 'Five Star RV Detailing', etc.

What if you offered up a total of 5 different services? They would all add up to 'Five Star'.

1- *Auto Detailing

2- *Boat Detailing

3- *RV Detailing

4- *Window Tinting

5- *Vinyl Graphics

Just my thoughts...

How about 5 Star Automotive Detailing & Accessories. That way it incorporates the original name that has built a reputation and then adds the new services by saying accessories.

+1 I think this is the best coarse of action! You can begin by answering your phone as Five Star and cut off the "detailing". Slow phase out of detailing which you are known for and a phase in of the new services you will offer. Just be sure to remind clients as they come in that you now offer......x, y, & z!
