The PC just doesn't work anymore....

It seems like a lot of people are pushing the rotary and saying the PC can't be used for correction. Quite a change from autopia of a few years back. I've seen several threads where people say its ok for a newbie to start with a rotary if they are careful. Two points I'd like to make and then I'll get off my soapbox:

1. I would not allow anyone new to detailing to touch my car with a rotary. I've seen some pretty wicked damage from a rotary, and have inflicted a few myself. I don't know of anyone that has used a rotary for an appreciable amount of time that hasn't had an oops.

2. The PC will correct any paint damage that a rotary can do. Sure it will take much longer, but it will get the work done, especailly with the better polishes out today. I've taken out 2000 grit sanding marks with a PC and #84, #83, #82.

The PC does do things slower, and that is exactly why it is better for someone who is trying to do DIY paint correction.

I love my pc especially with the advent of SMAT.

Granted I have not yet used a rotary, I haven't came across anything where I've absolutely needed one.

I use a PC and a yellow pad w/ aggressive polish (GlossHaus Foundation I) to get quite a bit of correction. I completely agree that the PC is a hugely effective tool.

I use both regularly and have to agree that the PC is still a very formidable tool in a correction arsenal. I find myself using rotary type habits with the PC because I forget how slow I need to be with it. I still wouldn't go without it.

I use both as well. I would not have it any other way. I started with a rotary and moved backwards, but still would not change it now.

IMO there are fewer "gotta use a rotary" opinions here recently..between the M105 and PFW products and the KBM people are giving the PC more serious consideration than in the past.

Each has its place.

Analogy- polishing and photography:

By-hand polishing is like a disposable camera, better than nothing.

PC/etc. polishing is like a digital point-and-shoot, pretty simple and most people will do OK by their standards.

The Flex and/or more serious PC/etc. efforts are like a good DSLR, easy enough for beginners with real potential there for anybody who cares and works at it. Quick/steep learning curve where great results can come easily.

The rotary is like a handheld light meter and a medium/large format camera, really wonderful for the few who can do it right, but not for everybody. Long/shallow learning curve and some will never master it.

I knew you'd find this thread!!!! Your analogy works except for one thing, you can't damage much with a camera!

Heh heh, yeah...good point there. Though having/not photos of certain things can often mean as much to me as the result/damage from polishing ;)

Another analogy I thought of had straight razors, safety razors, disposables, and electrics (oops, inverted the order there) and another involved various ways of sharpening knives; those might've been better...but I'm more into photographic equipment :D

I think the razor analogy is great! I was thinking something along the likes of small motorcycle vs one of the new liter bikes, but razors works even better.

agreed and with new technology advancing and progressing all the time, it makes the PC alot more effective and able to remove serious defects easier...

:rofl

No no no no no, that was a typo on my part. We're talking about the same thing. Firefox and tabs has allowed me to browse autopia while surfing the net for a plethora of SMUT. Don't you love technology.
