The Opinion Thread.........

Everyone is entitled to their opinions and it's nice to see everyone expressing theirs. I thought I'd add my opinions to this new thread, maybe it will help others understand where I'm coming from in the future.

How I Choose A Wax:

Reflections can be very important on some vehicles since their curves are sometimes subtle so anything to accentuate them is a plus. Too much reflection OTOH will hide the true color of the car and IMHO take away from it. This last statement is probably why certain waxes look good on certain cars and not on others. I love the way Zaino looks on my wifes silver CRV, the silver paint doesn't have tonal differences in the metallic flakes so you don't lose depth with Zaino. On my car I prefer the look of GC or Nxt since they darken my paint and add depth. I noted that S100 did not change the depth appearance of my paint but it did add gloss, not what I was after. I also won't choose a wax for it's protective abilities. I'm a car enthusiast and I like my car looking perfect all the time. I believe that not one wax will look as good as it did the day you applied it if it's seen the elements. If it doesn't look perfect I'll wax again thus the protective layer never really diminishes. I'm sure many on Autopia fall into this category although I wonder how many still choose based on protection.

The Waxes I Prefer:

Seems the consensus is that GC isn't much of a "looker" and doesn't provide that elusive "Pop" everyone is looking for. I'm of the opposite opinion and I'll stick to my guns. I've done dozens of side by side comparisons and honestly have yet to find one product that will darken the paint and provide the optical clarity that GC does. Note this is on on my own personal car which may have alot to do with my results. I admit GC doesn't provide the bright reflections you get from say S100 or #26, it has a look all it's own. I remember comparing GC to Zaino and just staring in disbelief at how disappointing the Zaino side looked in comparison to the GC. I also didn't care for the way #7 looked on my car, I noted a big reduction in reflective qualities when I applied the #7. On that note my current favorite is Nxt, it adds the depth I like with a liquid like appearance I've yet to find with any other product. Stay tuned because I intend to try Souveran soon and I'm sure it will make for a tough decision.

I hope you'll add your reasons for choosing the products you do so we can all better understand what you're after.

LOL, I agree completely, especially with your assessment of color/shape/depth/reflectivity, and FOR ME, the products that do it aren't the same as the ones that do it for you!

On my red car, it's #7 and #26 all the way, with Souveran Paste for that last little bit of "pop" before a big show (daily driver).

Otherwise, I'd bet I've written here almost the exact same words as you have.

Thanks for your opinion and input. I have been a turtle wax user for a few years and my honest opinion that it is not as bad as people say. On a properly prepared surface, turtle wax will shine as much as more expensive waxes (to the naked eyes).

My opinion is that most of the appearance factor is in our heads. Can I really tell if one wax looks "clean," if the other looks "harder," and the other looks "warm-fuzzy?" Bright, brassy, bold? I doubt it... we aren't reviewing speakers. I'll post more later.

Oh also, detailing isn't static. I've certainly changed a lot in my views.

I prefer waxes that leave a very wet look, sort of like when a piece of hard candy is wet (the best way I can describe it). Swirl Free/Vanilla Moose/Carnauba Moose gives me that look. Hand Polish and Souveran does too, but at a much higher cost. I also find the 'silvery' wet look you get from Vanilla Moose/S100 appealing. Intermezzo described the S100 look best as the paint looks like it is covered with liquid mercury.

For dark colors, (Eg. Black & Red, etc.), I really love either swirl free followed by vanilla moose or SEPC/GEPC and Souveran. For lighter colors, especially metallics, I prefer AIO topped with S100/P21S or AIO, PUPP topped with S100/P21S.

I can't wait to try the new NXT to see how it compares to any of the above.

It's worth comparing waxes and polishes side-by-side. When you find a wax that makes the color and shape of your car stand out, you'll know it. I've tried dozens of waxes side-by-side only to say... "gee, looks the same to me". That's because so much of the result is in the prep work. Try products on less than perfect paint. That's the true test. Any wax will look okay on a perfectly polished car.

LOL, as one who loves to write that kind of stuff, I agree completely! I believe it, and I like to write it, but I'm under no illusion that it's anything but subjective, and certainly not absolute true, and that it depends as much on what Iate for breakfast or did I argue with my wife as much as on what it actually looks like. I just like to write it down.

I know I'm a detail newb still, but the Mother's stuff seems pretty nice, decently priced as well. I have the 3 step process and the cleaner/wax for general use and it really brought out the shine in a 10 year old Mercury a couple of weekends ago..
