The many strange registrations?

Evidently, I am missing something in the strange registrations that are quite often attempted.
I'm not referring to the strange people that do register and tend to make strange posts.
I mean those that don't even use a screen name that makes any sense and don't really do anything after they register.
Is there something to be gained by those individuals that I'm not seeing? Seems like a lot of effort for nothing.
I realize that very few of the registrations are accepted, but that doesn't seem to stop them from trying.

I was digging threw the members area the other day and thought the same thing, we have a lot of registered members but I would bet that one third post anything...on a regular bases...if thats what you are saying

There are a lot of registrations where it is all jibberish. The screen name and e-mail have no readable meaning to them. Not sure what they are trying to accomplish either but I have gotten in the habit of just deleting their account before it is activated. We get atleast 2 or 3 a day sometimes 10 or more. Wish these morons would find better things to do.

While what you state is also somewhat puzzling, what I was referring to was the people that attempt to register with a screen name that is random numbers or letters.
The general membership doesn't see very many of them because Troy and the mods do a good job of weeding them out. Very few actually get completely registered.
I just didn't understand what was the reason for even making the attempt.

Addendum: Yeah, what Troy said. :)

Beemerboy ,I agree with you, over all this site looks very inviting to new comers so I understand why people would want to join in without hesitation,as for why they don't post anything on regular bases ,I can only guess that they over estimated their enthusiasm for detailing, and soon must have realized it take time ,knowledge of different products/equipments and their capabilities , money ,etc.after all this is an art not just a hobby,or a simple wash it /wax it and forget it.
Soooooo some of them must have found out that they must really get involved and learn quite a bit but were not prepared to do that so they become lurkers ;)
This is just a guess on my part, but I'm sure there are other reasons but I can't think of one right now.:hmmm:

Most (if not all) of the "odd" screen names that someone will see on the "newest member" are spammers, and like Troy says they never even get a chance to post.

those giberish registrations are bots. They are automated registrations created for posting spam. You see a lot of it on large forums.

Makes sense.:bigups
I didn't understand why they would want to register at a whole bunch of sites that they wouldn't be able to access.
If you do a google search on some of the weird names, you will find where they have registered at lots of sites and never done anything more.
I couldn't imagine a person wasting that much time. A computer program to make those registrations I can understand.

is my screen name weird too?

its actually my ICQ number when I had it back in my school days

what no not at all...23790554 is a pretty common name...just the other day I was thinking about joining a forum with 45509732...LOL

just kiddin.

I think that Charles is referring to names like "ddxftlwi"

But there is a whole lot more to it than just the name.
Email addresses also play a big part in identifying spammers.

Not if it has a meaning to you.

Are you sure that 45509732 hasn't already been taken as a screen name?

Exactly.
Many of the screen names that might seem strange to me probably have a meaning to those that use them.
Hey, I don't do real well figuring out personalized license plates, either. :)
