The G35's are after me (and a Lexus decides to say HI!) 56k = :O

Hey everyone, going to be a picture filled post of fun, light on the explaination because I am le tired. If you see the sun let me know, since I haven't been able to get pics with it in like a week. :/

First up, 2005 Lakeshore Slate G35 sedan. Very cool color, looks really dark in the shade but "pops" in the sun. Owner takes very good care of it, light scratches and some minor swirls, probably the most productive part was the clay (took a lot of junk off). Interior was a little soiled, but not too bad. No befores because I'm lazy.

Wash (P21S)

Clay (with some clay)

PC w/ white LC pad + Opt comp mixed with opt polish on entire car

Spot polish via orange pad and opt hyper (hood, tops of fenders, rear decklid)

RMG

Nattys Blue

PBs wheelwax

Megs insane on the tires

303 everywhere else.

Another 2005 G35 sedan, this time Brilliant Silver. Again, light scratches with some minor swirling. Quite a bit of road tar on the rockers and fenders, clay got that. Rubber/plastic trim was kind of a mess, sucked up a lot of trim restorer but I think I got it. Interior wasn't done.

Wash (P21S)

Clay

IP w/orange pad

FP II w/ white pad

Zaino Z2

pb's trim restore

wheelwax

z16 on tires

2001 IS300. Originally I thought it looked ok, but when I started working on it I realized the entire rear and front had been repainted. Owner confirmed, rear bumper cover and fenders, trunk, hood, and front fenders all repainted (badly). The color and flake was ok but the paint had a sort of sandpaper-y feel too it, definitely weird. Condition of the paint was ok otherwise, some swirling and a lot of goop for the clay to take off. It came out well, but the paint was still oddly textured when I was done. I did the interior but forgot to take shots, lame - it was pretty dirty before I began. Oh well.

Wash (P21S)

Clay (a lot)

Opt compound w/orange pad

AIO w/ white

Z5/Z2

Wheelwax, megs insaneshine. Trim got 303.

Off to do another G35 (and black too!)... damned things. :)

Cheers.

Very nice work. How do you like Menzerna IP/FPII compared to Optimum Compound/Polish? Did you use Menzerna on the second G35 just to mix it up, or does it look better for silver?

Excellent work on all three! :up

I can see what you mean on the IS, the back end's paint does have a different look, seems a bit lighter and less reflective.

Thanks! The silver G needed a bit more love, so I went with IP over the entire car then FPII to clean up any hazing. The Menzerna's just work a bit faster, so since I knew I'd be doing two fill steps and didn't have hours to work on it I decided to go with them. The first G was in really good condition to begin with, I almost could have gotten away with just Opt Polish over the entire thing on an orange pad, but I decided to spot polish the tough spots then do opt on the white pad because it finishes so nicely. So I guess the answer is that either polishes would have worked on either car, but since I needed a bit more "fast bite" on the silver G I went with Menzerna. Opt hyper definitely would have done it, just takes longer.

One more consideration was as you can see the day of the first G was really sunny, so opt was a better choice (Menzerna is dust city in the sun). I'd be hard pressed to choose between Opt comp/polish or Menzera IP/FPII, I like having both around. Sorry for the lame answer :)

Thanks Scott. You've got a good eye, the rear bumper cover and trunk were definitely the worst of the repaints. Very rough feeling, almost no gloss or reflectivity.

WOW!

So tempting :D.

How much is the silver G lowered? If you had to choose, would you choose Lakeshore Slate, Diamond Graphite, or Liquid Platinum for your next G?

Hah, I thought you might post. Wait till you see the pics I'll have next week. Should be ~20 G's or so. :)

The brilliant silver G is on stock 350z springs, it's lowered about 1.5 inches in the rear and about 1.3 inches up front. The ride is still nice, but definitely stiffer than stock (a little stiffer than the sport suspension).

If I had to choose one of those colors it'd definitely be DG. Why? Even though it's super popular I think it's the best blend of "dark and reflective" and "easy to maintain". It's a great color with a lot of flake that really ripples in the sun. My runner up would be lakeshore, then BS - but only because I'm not a big fan of silver cars. I was surprised how much I liked the lakeshore slate in person in the sun, but my wife hates blue so... :)

Have you looked at Ivory Pearl at all? Looks better on the coupe but it's still hot on the sedan, and it's a gorgeous color. There's a guy on g35driver.com (Vodkarocket) that has an amazing IP sedan.

Anyway, sorry for the ot. Back to my sweet detailing :p

Very nice work, all the G35's and the Lexus look great. I'm puzzled what you mean about the sun, it's been sunny all week hasn't it?

Thanks!

The first car I had lots of sun - the second G was yesterday morning, and it was just kind of overcast. The Lexus I started kind of late. Maybe I should have said "I'm dumb and don't take pics at the right time" rather than there is no sun. :)

See what happens when you post pics of your work on driver Picus!!! LOL looks like you your G was sleeping around so now you have all the "g kids" to provide for! LOL

All look super clean! Isn't it so much easier working on cars you're familiar with! lol

What's funny is in every set of pictures I have of G's I've cleaned, my G is sitting quietly in the background, condemning me for touching other cars. She's a jealous little minx, that one. :)

And yes, it's definitely easier when you know exactly how a cars curves move, and how the paint will react. It's like working on sisters... scandalous!

It's stalking me!

Hey Picus, have you done an ATHENS BLUE G yet? If peeps here liked the lakeshor, I think they would flip over the Athens blue! I don't even see too many around here for some reason, but if I didn't have black, that would be my next choice!

Nice pics of your G! Well, at least she knows you're cheating on her and not doing it behind her back.....well in some of the pics you were! LOL

I haven't done an Athens blue G yet - but I want to, I like that color a lot too. I have a Carib blue G on Friday of next week; it's at a tuner shop getting onerhauled, so it should be an interesting detail.

Thanks for all the kind comments fellas. :)

What combo will go with on the CB? I will admit to despising CB up until recently and now I actually love it! Pretty close to AB so we should get a good "view" of what you can do with Athens! LOL Can't wait to see those!

I think I'll be working on AB soon too. Saw it today, what an awesome color.

I think on CB I will go with EX-P topped with Nattys blue or FMJ by itself. If I get my werkstatt stuff by then maybe I will try AJ on it. I guess whatever strikes me. :)

Judging by the description of the paint I think I will probably go with IP/FPII/RMG (or maybe skip rmg, tough to say).

Hah. Those black G's man.. what a pain. I did two today. I took this after a wash and was all "alright, I think I can do this with one polishing step, two hours tops..."

b5.jpg

So I drove it inside to polish and put the halogen on and...

:(

More tomorrow! :D

Time to finesse out some swirls, eh?

The black one I did today is pretty close to defect free now, been taking care of it for around a year. Got about 85% of the stuff out the first time, just knocking out another 5% at a time...seems to be working well though, all the light polishing has really refined the finish, just unreal wetness and depth now!
