I am a novice at this so I'm probably missing some fundamental info: So far I've prepped the finish, and put on 2 coats of KAIO, and 2 coats of KSG. The car looks great!

Is there a reason I should ever use KAIO on this car again? Will adding a layer of KSG every month or so keep protecting what's already on there, and keep the finish shining like it is now?

buffotoad,

You should use the KAIO if you want to remove the KSG and start all over. For example, you just completed 2 coats of KAIO and 2 coats of KSG. Well maybe in 6 months, you want to refresh that great shine after a loooong winter of snow, rain and whatever. Don't just layer more KSG, use KAIO to strip off what is left, remove any contaminants and leave a clean, smooth surface to apply your KSG. Kinda like having a fresh canvas for a new painting.;)

Well, there are a few reasons to apply AIO. It depends on your cars condition. If there are no contaminates on the paint and is very smooth, then you can keep layering. On lower parts that have some ferrous/road particles, such as bumpers, you might want to use AIO.

You can also use a clay bar before adding layers of SG just to be safe.

Good luck!

If your car is a daily driver, after about 6 months your going to want to clay/polish your paint again to remove any swirl marks/contaminants that have accumulated over that 6 month period, as no matter how hard we try swirl marks and contaminants are going to accumulate on your finsh. IMHO, AIO is an additional means of cleaning your paint in addition to laying down protection that will last 6 months. I personally feel better when I know there is a layer or two of AIO under my layers of KSG, so that I know I have maxium protection and shine.

Using more than one coat of AIO is really not necessary, unless you feel the first coat did not polish the paint adequately. AIO will not layer because the second coat will remove the first coat due to its polishing action. SG will layer, as it does not have any polishing capabilities.

Personally, if I felt that the paint required a deeper polish, I would use PPCL (or stronger) prior to the AIO, or perhaps use a PC with white polishing pad to apply AIO instead of by hand. Just my 2 cents....

Moving slightly off the original question: As for the 6 month rule NOT applying to Zaino, I assume that the Z5 is supposed to "cure" the swirling problem. But I assume you still clay before adding additional coats of Z5/Z2. I don't know how the claying will affect the layers of Zaino already on the car, but I think you can clay Zaino...??

With zaino, you never really have to start over. I just maintain with weekly washings and QD-ing and do a Clay bar 1-2 times a year and keep on zainoing. If some swirls develop, z5 usually takes care of them as they are usually in the polish layer and additional coats of Z5 even it out. Clay will not strip zaino but might remove it in areas where it pulls some dirty through. This is why with Zaino it is important to get the finish flawless before starting, and it is worth every minute of time being that maintaining the car for years to come will be a breeze..........

On a microscopic level it would be very difficult to not get any contaminents between successive layers of SG (or Zaino for that matter) Washing does not clean off precisely everything so contaminants (though a very small amount) are inbetween the layers somewhere.

That is the reason to reapply AIO to start fresh and to remove the layers that sure were good, but may have contained contaminants.

I'm going to be applying SG to my car this week and I'm not going to drive it, in order to ensure the layers are as close to as perfect as I can get it.

Todays and tomorrows fun is a black lexus LS430.

Got Bret coming down tomorrow to help out with the polishing. :wizard:

I hope to get the interior done this evening. :out:

We will give the new Festool FEQ 150 a workout.

We might sand the trunk and hood, see how the surbufs do first.

Here are a few pics of the carnage:

Its actually worse then the pics show.

Wow, looks like some hacking took place on that poor thing.

If anybody can bring it back it will be you. :)

What is it with these black LS430s? I seem to remember you doing a couple of write ups on others in the past and they were all trashed. This one seems to be following that trend.

Thanks for your support guys!

Just glad Bret is helping out. Just got done doing full interior including carpet extraction and I am done for the night.

For real! I had one that was like this (from what I have seen). Sad thing is, the owner didn't even want it fully corrected, they just wanted the bad scratches gone.

Looking forward to this one Bryan!
