Taking Dust off... California Duster?

I wash and wax my Black car yesterday... and what do you know, it's covered in dust today.

When i goto car shows (outdoors) and see black cars, i usually see the "Califorina Duster" in peoples touch-up buckets.

What do you all sugguest to keep the dust off of her?

Is the California Duster the best thing to use? and if not, Why?

Thanks all!

I think the California Duster is great. I have a Millenium Green (read dark green) Infiniti I30t and that thing shows the dust like crazy. A few minutes with the Duster really makes a nice difference.

Just make sure your car is cool to the touch before you use it. The fibers are impregnated with a paraffin wax to help retain the dust particles and if you run it along a warm body panel, it will soften that wax and leave streaks.

ah, so how do you use it? you just run it over an area... then do you shake it out or something? or just pass it over the entire car?

then do you clean it each time or every now and again? and how?

Thanks for the help!:xyxthumbs

Another option is a dry, brand new microfiber towel. They pick up dust like a magnet. Just lay it on the paint and gently pull across the surface. No pressure is necessary.

I use the California Duster too. I think it works great. I take the advice of that someone (I forget who) gave on how to use it. Just kind of dangle the threads to where they lightly touch the paint, don't press it down and rub it all around. Go in the same direction as windflow when you drive, and shake it out after each pass. I've seen some people kind of scrub the paint with it, and I don't think that can be good.

scrub the paint with it? lol i dont think thats good either.

so when your all done dusting for the day... do you wash it out or what? just shake all the dust off?

After using aduster I shake it a bit but was told that the dirtier it gets the better it works. I think as it gets older the excess wax has gone away and your left with a soft rag for grabbing the dirt. Not sure how you would clean it, even if you wanted to.

Is that a pic of a '57 you actually own? I absolutely love '55s and '57s. I want to rebuild a 2 door hard top '57, or a '55 Nomad one day. If you have a gallery I would love to see some shots of your ride.

Yeah, I just shake the duster out a little bit when I'm all done with it. I'm sitting here with the book that came with mine, and it says if you ever feel it gets too dirty you can hand wash it in lukewarm water with something like Woolite.

I have an OXO duster, which is similar to a Cali Duster. You just drag it lightly across the paint to get the dust off. After each use, I shake it vigorously to release any loose dust.

i have a slight problem when dusting. every time i dust it seems as if the dust just gets pushed to the end of the car (or wherever i stop the wipe). it doesnt' seem to get picked up.

so what is the best way to remove dust completely, without harming the wax job or paint? the cars always get dusty where they are stored, and if they go outside for a second they get covered in pollen.

what about a spray and wipe? also, how do you maintain a duster/towel so you can re use it and not add more dust to the problem?

:) :) :) I really don't know what the difference is either but the OXO does seem to work much better. The fibers appear to be finer than some of the Cali dusters that I have used in the past.

As far as washing the duster, I have tried that in the past and ended up with a tangled mess. The end result was the trash can. For about $20 for a new one it isn't worth it.

Difference between OXO and Cali is the name. I think the OXO might have a rubber surround for protection, and the Cali does not.

Ask and ye shall receive, some pics of the 57. Actually it is my "wife's" car but somehow I seem to drive it more! Check out my gallery

The CCD will not spread the dust but pick it up. When there is a LARGE amount of Dust/Pollen on my freshly washed paint, i'll give it a squirt with some canned air to blow off the majority, then go over it with the CCD.

I picked up the 'mini' Cal Duster at Big Lots for $6.99. Works like a champ on pollen esp with a smooth, waxed surface underneath.
