Swirling

Hi Guys,

I would appreciate a bit of advice. Tried removing the swirls from my carbon black m3 today with no joy.

I used:

Porter Cable

Orange sonus cutting pad

Poorboys SSR2.5

Max speed with slow multiple passes.

No joy

I also tried SSR1 with blue finishing pad afterwards which seemed to cover up the swirls a bit more but not satifactory.

In the end i just topped it off with EX-P. Nice and shiny but not very pleased with the outcome.

This is not my 1st attempt with the PC and this combination of polishes so was a little surprised with the results. Other cars have been fine.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

To the best of your knowledge has the car been repainted in areas? Do you have any other polishes other than SSR2.5 and SSR1? Do you have any pictures of the swirls? Are the swirls you are chasing visible mainly in sunlight and/or artificial light? How much polish are you using per 2x2 ft section? How inches per second aer you moving the PC when polishing? Answer to these questions will help us determine what could be going wrong. :)

The car hasn't been repainted to my knowlege. Paintwork is in good condition other than the swirling and a few stone chips. It's not dead or dull or anything.

The only other polish i have is Autoglym super resin and Klasse AOI.

The swirls are only visible in sunlight.

I have tried both minimal amounts and OTT amounts of polish. Not really any difference in the results.

Im moving the pc VERY slowly.

Some of the swirls may just be deeper in the finish than you think. I would try a different polish if possible to see if it helps. If that doesnt work then rotary action may be necessary.

Suggest you give Sonus Swirlbuster Polish a try for the black car - I love how it's removed the Swirls on mine.

Chris.

might wanna jump to a more aggresive pad??? isnt the orange pad pretty light duty, well i know i dont get finished results using it anyhow.

A little update. After trawling through the various forums, the consensus is that BMW paint is odd. It can either be very soft or very hard. There is even varying degrees of toughness within the same colour.

Well from my previous attempt, I already know mine is hard :(

From what I can gather, the three best products for my hard paint is as follows (not in any specific order):

Compound

1-Menzerna intensive pro (3.01)

2-Blackfire SRC compound (Same as above with extra oils added for longer working times)

3-Optimum hyper compound

Used with my PC and either a Yellow Sonus SFX-1 or yellow LC cutting pad.

Finishing polish (not in any specific order):

1-Megs #83 cleaner/polish

2-PB's SSR1

3-Blackfire SRC finishing polish

Used with my PC and either a white Sonus SFX-2 or LC green finishing pad.

Im going to give one of thses combinations a try one weekend and i'll let you know how I get on.

I know there are a million products out there and everyone has their own favorites but from talking with other detailers I know these products work well with my particular paint! Although any thoughts are welcomed.

So far the most agressive pad I've found is the Meguiars Burgundy 6.5" pad. It is agressive in itself, but it is also very durable so you can apply more pressure without the pad giving out :)

Remember, it takes 15-20lbs of pressure on the PC to get good results :getdown
