swirl removal with sponge

Was speaking with a friend of mine and she mentioned removing swirls by using a sponge on the paint's clearcoat. The conversation ended at that point and I was left a bit confused. He did say that body shops do it that way all the time. Anyone here have some more infor about this, kind of curious about it.

Did she mean a foam applicator?

She may have seen that a spoinge and foam are made basically of the same stuff (Foam rubber) and decide to call it a sponge? Just a thought.

Yeah, it sounds like there's a missing piece of information. I used to use cellulose sponges to apply products back in the day, and I'd assume that's what this is about.

About a year ago, I learned to use a common grout sponge to both apply and remove polishes/compounds by hand with good results. Honestly, I think using a folded terry cloth towel does a better job, possibly because of the additional heat it likely generates. :xyxthumbs
