Surbuf pads...

I misapplied mine...used them incorrectly. DO NOT use them for very mild work :o



According to Kevin Brown, those things are the [stuff] for serious correction. He and I discussed them at some length and he says to apply just enough pressure to bend the "fingers" over but not enough to really flatten them.



Use these for really serious paint-cutting. KB *insists* that they're really, really good for this, so much so that it's hard for me to convey his enthusiasm!

This may be one of those times that the random orbital will rotate more times than the Flex will. :woot2:



Not to change the subject, but since the Flex was brought up it reminded me of this...



I don't know if anyone else has looked into it, but there was a good discussion on MOL about this a bit ago:

As it stands, the Flex literature lists the speed without load at 160-480 RPM and the orbit rate without load at 3,200-9,600 RPM (this is the same thing as oscillations per minute or OPM in the case of this machine). However, my own research into the specs show that the ratio is NOT 20:1, but is in fact 10:1.



How did I research this? It was super-technical... I used all sorts of meters and electronic gizmos with accelerometers and such. Naw, just kidding- I simply spun the backing plate by hand and counted how many in and out movements the backing plate made!



The total was ten oscillations for every rotation.

If the ratio of oscillations to rotations is 10:1, it is reasonable to assume that:



If the maximum OPM is 9,600, the rotation will be 960 RPM.

If the maximum RPM is 480, then the oscillation will be 4,800 OPM.



I placed a call to Flex N.A. and was supposed to send an e-mail to remind the guy to ask his R&D guys in Germany which spec was correct. I did not send the e-mail yet, but perhaps someone out there knows which specs are right.
 
Kevin Brown- With the minimal pressure required by the SurBufs, perhaps the PC *will* work OK. With both of mine, any significant pressure at all decreases the rotation a lot.



And yeah, there was no question about the Flex 3401's actual ratio of oscillations to rotations. Heh heh, I'm chuckling over my brain-pause about being able to count them with the machine turned off due to the rotation being gear-driven :o Sure easier than doing it with the free-spinning machines!
