I just tried SSR 1 & 2 (as well as the polish) this past weekend having bought the stuff for the first time. My car's paint is kept in pretty good condition but did have light scratches from dust vs. car cover. I started with the SSR2 using a porter cable DA polisher and found that even the 2 was not as abrasive as I thought it would be. It got rid of many of the scratches and i was very pleased with the product. I was in the same boat as you, concerned it maybe too abrasive.
I would say to test the #2 on a small part of a fender first, I really don't think you'll have much to worry about if you start with #2.
