Spray paint on side of Scion

"Luck" Residue of design
I have a job next week removing spray paint from the side of a Scion. The car was dirty when the vandals sprayed it so there is dirt under the paint. I priced this job out at 3 hours so I want to work quickly as I intend on doing a very quick pass with PWS to shine the rest of the car up. what are your ideas as to addressing the dirt covered vandalism? It is a charcoal looking heavy metallic paint job with what appears to be orange marking paint sprayed on it.

I belive Scion is like Saturn and I have done a few Saturns and the paint was relatively soft, anybody know about the paint characteristics of this cars finish? it is one if those square Scions.

I'd try a presoak with Goof Off, WD-40, or mineral spirits. Let it sit on the srapyed paint and possibly it would break it up. Then you could clay and polish.

I think the "toaster" Scion is the Xb model.

I wonder if the dirt film will act as a "buffer" between the paint and the spray. In addition to JPs suggestion, a red bar of ClayMagic will come in handy. I used that for a similar situation some years back (white spray paint on a white car -- what were the vandals thinking???)

I might be wrong but I wouldn't think any damage would be caused from the dirt if you clayed. That is unless its filthy. You would just have to be careful and not drag the dirt the clay picks up down the side of the car. CM red is really good for overspray. I've had some probs using it on dark colors though because its so abrasive.

This is what I am hoping for, the car is pretty dirt covered and the spray paint feels really rough so the adhesion may be weakened enough by the dirt so the larger particles can be clayed off with the red clay.

I have about 100 grams of red left so I'll take JP's advice and try to at least partially disolve the spray paint with a solvent before I clay.

Thanks guys for your suggestions

As MC81 mentioned, I can't imagine that you won't have to polish after using the red clay. The few times I've had to resort to the red clay, polishing was required to remove some marring regardless of the paint color. But then I suspect that you factored some polishing time into your estimate anyway.

Good luck! Let us know how it comes out (or off :))

You also wanna go ahead and pick up there RV/Boat & Airplane cleaner. You will eventually need it, probaly sooner then later

Go to Loews, they carry this product line. If they do not have the one your looking for in stock they will order it w/ free shipping :wow:

if there was dirt under the graffiti i would try just prepsol on it, chances are if it was dirty enough the paint wont stick that well and will just rub off

I did a job once where I had to removal paint from a Dodge Ram.

Posted the thread on another board.

I will post it here so just search and you can see what I did. Not sure how similar since this was road line paint but it was on there for like two weeks or something.

Hopefully I can help you out.

OK This one is done now. Wouldn't you know the battery on my camera was completely dead this morning so no pics. But the customer was happy with the results.

Just a wash then used some laquer thinner on a cotton towel to remove the spray paint, clayed and polished the entire car quickly with PB PWC blue on a polishing pad using the Flex. PB B&B on tires and wheel wells. Another happy customer is all that counts. I wanted to do more to the car but the agreed price didn't allow for it.

Anyway thanks to all of you who gave suggestions.
