SpeedFreak Detailed: TRASHED '02 BMW M5

Was contacted by a fellow forum member on bfc about doing a recondition on his M5. Upon arriving we discussed the car's history and the fact that he bought it recently sight unseen. He advised me that the hood had been repainted and was in bad shape. :eek:Was it ever! It really needs to be wetsanded, but I decided to see what I could do with just compound. Also, there was orange peel, overspray, and mismatched paint on a good number of body panels. This was probably the most labor intensive detail I've done to date. Because there were so many panels that had been repainted at one time or another, it was like starting from scratch on each panel. I had to develop a new plan of attack each time I moved to a new one. Unfortunately the color did NOT cooperate while trying to snap 50/50 shots. Try as I might, I only got a few decent shots that in no way represent the magnitude of improvement. Rather than mess around any further at that point, I just decided to focus 100% of my effort on the task at hand. The clear on this car was so soft that the Pinnacle finishing polish on white pad was actually still marring the surface. I had to step all the way down to the Menz PO87MC on grey to get it to finish out completely. If I didn't know any better I'd have thought I was working on black Porsche paint.

Exterior aside, the car was actually in great mechanical condition with only 55k on the clock. 16 hours later, the car looks ALMOST as good as it runs!:buttrock

Thanks for the positive remarks guys. Scott, I actually didn't think they were quite that bad. Course, I've got probably 10 different brushes to get after all the crevices with.

Thomas, thanks a lot! Wish I could make it to the detailfest, been a while since I've seen you. Hope all is well with you and the family out in Portland.
