The recent popularity of the M66 cushioned backing plate has me back to an idea I've been pondering for a year or two - a dual-sided hook and look foam spacer system for use with both foam and wool buffing pads. Similar to the dual-density foam pads that so many people like so much (except for the fact that the ones from CMA deliminate so easily), the spacter would provide much needed cusioning and enhanced flexibility to stiff cutting pads and flat lambwool pads.
A whole new cutting system could be developed whereby 1/2" thick, 6.0" wide foam spacers could be used to aide with white, orange, and yellow cutting pads as well as for wool pads. It might even be nice to have three different "densities" of spacers, thus offering varying degrees of firmness...like blue, green and even the white non-reticulated foam...could pair up with 6.5", 1" thick foam pads, allowing people the ultimate in flexibility to achieve their desired buffing characteristics. And man would this help those flat lambwool pads that are so difficult to work with via rotary.
All the companies are really into the catchy gimmic pads lately in an effort to sell, but I think a pad "system" such as this could potentially be plenty "catchy", and fully usefull and functional. I don't know, it could work.
