sorry for another thread but what kind of backing plate do you use on a dewalt 849?

The BP is related to the Pads not the machine. You can use any backing plate that will fit on it. Weather it be the Dewalt the makita or anything else. They are all universal to the spindle.

I don't really know much about this stuff, but what back plate should I buy and pads?

A little research would net you all those answers. I assume you really haven't used the rotary much before? Most people start out with 7" pads and matching BP's then move on to smaller pads once they get it down. I would check out the sponsors on this site and do some shopping with them. They can all hook you up with the pads for your application and matching BP's They have generic BP's and they have system specific types. (the edge2000 adaptor and buff-n-shine are two that come to mind)

thanks

can you get a 5 inch backing plate and use 4 inch pads?

No.. You always want you BP to be smaller than your pad. Can you imagine the horror that would result in having an BP exposed beyond the edge of the pad on the paint?? :soscared:
