properautocare.com says that to remove swirls start with a compound, they recommend 3M Fine cut compound, then polish, they recommend 3M SMR, then wax/seal.

I hear, and from the reviews the 3M fine cut and the SMR have the same cut/polish action. I have also been told that I should skip the fine cut bc of this and go straight for the finnesse it machine polish, and then polish with the SMR. Whats right? Which way should I go. I have a bunch of fine swirls all over, lots of them as I assume most who have never used a SMR would have on a car thats 4 years old.

In reality, either way could work for you. Fine Cut and Finesse It both will have a greater cutting power than SMR and both should be used prior to SMR on a car with substantial swirls.

I know it's confusing, but remember, there is a fine line between polishes and compounds and which has more cutting power.

I tend to prefer FI first then go to SMR myself. If using a PC, use a yellow pad with the FI and a white pad with the SMR.

What is that finesse it finishing material? I was planning on using the finesse it machine polish. So you think I should use that first then switch over to the SMR. That sounds like a great plan to me.

Same thing. Just a commercial size bottle.

Yes, I think FI then SMR is a great plan. I take care of 99% of all my light scratches and swirls with just those two products. I start with the yellow pad and switch to the white pad.

The ones that have the little finger like deals coming out of them?

Well yes it was an autopian, but it was stated like this, "the difference between SMR and the fine cut is minimal in terms of abrasiveness, you should skip it and go for the machine polish which is the most abrasive and then go over with SMR to polish it, then whatever you plan to finish with." So should I use the fine cut then the SMR or machine polish the SMR?

Your head is going to explode!

You can use one or the other. I suggested you use FI because I like it better. It is VERY close to Fine Cut* (I said that and stand by it) but I prefer FI. You don't need to use both.

*Not the Rubbing Compound

be sure to post some pics when you're done. Electron blue pearl is the best color ever

I will do that, EBP is definetaly a beautiful color, when done right its amazing. Where are you from?

I should post some up of the swirls if I can so you guys can make me a recomendation, the ones on the hood are the worst so whatever works on that will work on the rest. I think I put MORE in the paint from my last detail when I did a mothers 3 step, I dont remember it that bad...theres alot of little swirls. I need to rid these things. BTW: how cold is too cold to detail?

I'm in toronto.

It's funny that you mentioned putting swirls in your car with the Mothers' 3 step process because i think i did the same thing. The swirls on my car arent that bad but they still bother me everytime i look at it.

what works well on swirls for our car. I think I may start with the white pad and SMR on a section of the hood and inspect, if that doesnt get them then its on to the machine polish and the yellow pad...should that get the swirls out anybody? They dont appear deep just a good amount of them.
