So on the advice of a few autopians I picked up an inline water softener for my outside hose from http://www.pwgazette.com/gardenhosefilters.htm
I live in an area with REALLY hard water, and the filter made a huge difference for me. Almost no spotting at all (had a couple light spots that wiped right off that could have just been soap residue). Just wanted to let everyone know how great this product was for me, I would recommend it for anyone who doesn't have soft water already or lives somewhere that it's not practical to have a whole house system, and at 50 bux for the housing and the filter it's not a bad buy at all.
