So, What about Rain-X?

The Rainmaker
This is a product I have never used, but read lots about.
It seems to create either a love or hate relationship with users.
Is the difference of opinion because of the way it's used, environment, expectations?
Personally, I prefer to just try to keep my windows clean with no product used other than whatever I clean them with, but maybe I'm missing out on a good thing.

I use it on most of my clients vehicles and they love it. I use the spray bottle kind and it's very easy to use and adds a lot to a wash. Just fold a shop towel into a 3 by 5 size and spray it 3 or 4 times w/ the rain-x and put it on using circular motions. Let it dry to a haze then remove it w/ a MF. I mist distilled water on the windshield to help the removal process. It really helps and the whole process takes maybe 2 minutes.

I don't use it because I don't really see a need for it. Clean windshield and replacement of wiper blades is more than enough for a streak free windshield for me. Every time I have used RainX or anything similar, I always get blade chatter & streaks.

This is what I do. I really like Rain-X. Often times I don't need to turn on my wipers because the water is just flying off the window. IMO you can't put a price on the benefits of a clear windshield and this product definitely helps with that.

I know there are definitely people out there who have had issues with Rain-X though. I've seen countless posts about hazing and wiper chatter. I can't really say why this happens for some people and not others. I know I have not personally had any of these issues.

The hazing comes because people don't use the distilled water to help remove the rain-x. The chatter comes i believe from people letting the rain-x run down the windshield and touch the blade. The alcohol may dry out the blade.

I've used Rain-X for years and have never had a problem with it, but I know many people who have tried it and hated it as well. I find that it's more in the application than the product. First of all, a clean windshield is a slick windshield to begin with (you don't apply your lsp before fully prepping your paint do you?) and secondly, most people don't understand the purposes of rain-x.

I only use the original rain-x in the bottle, not the spray, and I always take my time applying and letting haze, then buffing off...and I really mean BUFFING off! I find most people that complain about wiper streaking and haze are the people who don't put the work into removing the product (obviously the distilled water helps make it easier if you don't want to work as hard, but I do it the hard way). Then I apply a second coat, let haze, and buff off again, making sure not to miss any spots (I even use distilled water here occasionally). Using this method, I've never had a single problem with my wipers streaking, window hazing, or other problems on my truck nor any other vehicle I've applied it to, including customers who have previously had problems with rain-x.
Rain-x is designed to let water bead and run immediately off the windshield, which allows you to drive without even using your wipers (Except in extreme conditions, and even then I barely use mine) because it is actually clearer than having the wipers going back and forth. Given proper application and upkeep (just like paint) I find that I almost never use my wiper blades, and I live in Florida. The only time I need them is when there's barely a sprinkle coming down and I'm not moving fast enough (20-25mph +) to run the water off. I still maintain my wipers and replace them regularly because in the event that I forget to reapply rain-x and it wears off and I realize it while in a storm, I like to know my wipers are going to work then!

In the end, as with every other automotive product, there are going to be extreme differences of opinion, so to each their own.

I used Rain-X for many years (both the original squeeze bottle and spray bottle varieties). When the product was applied correctly, it worked very well. I would only encounter problems with wiper chatter once the film started to wear off. As long as I kept a fresh coat of Rain-X on the windshield, there was no problem.

Now, I prefer to just use a light polish to keep my windshield completely clean. I don't have to worry about whether or not I need to apply a fresh coat of windshield treatment. I just polish the glass surfaces at the same time that I polish my paint. This solution works well for me. YMMV.

I don't care much for Rain-X. Didn't have the greatest results. I do alot of driving and in the foul weather with all the dirt on the roads in my area all the trucks I have to drive behind I wouldn't get much time between intervals of application and I was going through wiper blades every month or 2. I switched to a product called Aquapel made by PPG and had amazing results. 1 application lasted 5 to 6 months without re-applying and I was still on the same wiper blades throughout that time.

I agree will Rollin, Rain-X just doesn't last. We use Aquapel on our fleet vehicles and we get about 5 months out of an application and a one applicator will mostly do a windshield and the front side windows (on my Jetta I can do all the windows). You can buy a case(24) for about a $100. When I do details for my customers I charge an extra $15-20.

+1 I've tried my bottle out on various occasions, all of which led to wiper chatter or streaks (very apparent when driving into the sun). I feel that its best to leave the windows, especially the windshield untouched.

I really like RainX. I remember one instance when I had applied RainX to my windows and was able to drive in a fierce gully washer without the wipers on.

I agree success with the product has to do with it's application. It does take quite a bit of elbow grease to get all the stuff removed from the windows. A double layer is also best.

What I don't like is the lack of durability. After the effort of putting it on if you are in a rainy season it may last a month. A little longer, 2 months at best if you don't use the wipers. Which is the whole purpose of RainX.

I'm intrigued by Aquapel. However 5-6 bucks an application is kinda pricey.

My question is why have't glass makers incorporated a RainX type layer built onto the glass.

I have heard that some people use glass wax to give their windshield some sort of protection (waterspots, tiny scratches...). Rain x used to call their classic windshield treatment a glass wax - does anybody who uses it, feel that it protects the windshield against scratches too?
:hmmm:
