Small and compact equipment is the hot topic

Hey everyone, this is Mel Craig from The Total Pros and Smart Detailing University. Looks like 2010 has turned out to be a recovering year after all... Wow, we, at The Total Pros are seeing some awesome growth by our own rights but more importantly we are seeing a huge increase in new detailing business start ups. With all the new technology being introduced to our industry it's become very apparent it's no longer an expensive battle to get started in the detailing business. So, its no surprise that more and more people are looking at this industry with a different attitude now.

One other great thing we are seeing is that the foot print (space), needed to carry and store all your detailing and reconditioning supplies and equipment in the mobile environment has gotten very tight and a heck of a lot smaller and compact. No more need for trailers, large capacity vans and huge pick up trucks if your looking to get started in the mobile detailing business.

I've actually got one of my students that went through our training program a couple of years ago. He and his partner bought a "Smart Car" and believe it or not they have everything they need to perform high end detailing packed in the back of that Smart Car. I not kidding and if I did not see it for myself It would have been hard for me to believe. I'm not saying thats the way to go but, what I am saying is that it's now very possible to start thinking small and compact. Start thinking about going green and becoming eco friendly in all your detailing efforts.

Metro vac is putting out a great little high powered compact vac and blow system that is proving itself as a big hitter. Dura-maid is also putting out a compact hot water extractor that is performing beyond all our expectations especially with its size and light weight. The new porter cable 7424 XP is also holding a high ranking in performance and defect removal.

This is all new technology that has most definitly started a new trend in going "Compact And Tight" "Eco Friendly and Green"

Good luck out there. And oh ya, be sure to talk to at least 3 to 5 new customers everyday about the services you offer and you won't believe how much work you will have in less then 3 months.

I believe Mel is just trying to get a topic started and is identifying himself as the owner of a business. As far as I am aware, he is not breaking any forum rules.

It's good to finally see you here on Autopia, Mel! I don't think I have ever met anyone more passionate and enthusiastic about the detailing world and it would be a great benefit to the Autopia community to have you and your insights here.

As far as the "hot topic", I presently work out the back of a Volkswagen (somewhere very uncomfortable?) by using many of these space-saver tools. I love my Metro vac, ONR, and steamer.

Just for FYI to anyone reading this thread, I own a Durrmaid. Yes, it is compact, yes, it is an awesome little machine, and yes, it performs extremely well. That said, I've had 2 defective pumps, the hose coming out of the solution tank has leaked, and the solution hose keeps breaking on me (small diameter opague PVC hose keeps getting cut on the brass fitting). Dennis (the owner of Durrmaid) has been very helpful, I can't complain much about the customer service, he has promptly sent me 2 replacement pumps without question. Still waiting on a replacement hose, apparently he's using a new design now.

My point is, yes it's a great little extractor, but my personal experience has taught me that I can't count and rely on it.

I am one of the many folks starting up a mobile auto detailing business. I am working out of a toyota 4x4 pickup, and trying to fit in a small generator, compressor, bags of supplies, vacuum, water tank, pressure washer, and I am trying to make a decision on a carpet extractor right now. I would love to see photos of other peoples compact setups.

You have a canopy ?

I detail out of a 4x7 open trailer and have everything I need right there, I don't have any pics as I'm getting the trailer repowder-coated as we speak, but here's my lay out:

trailerlayout.jpg

the buckets are held by bucket holders made for ATV's. In the tool box, I have room for a jack with 4 jack stands (to remove wheels and such), a simple tool kit (for removing license plates, visors, etc.) 2 extension chords, 3 buffers, bissel little green machine. All of my products, microfibers towels, and little detailing tools are organized in 3 different 3 drawer carts. The only things that does not fit in the trailer are my 2 10x10 canopies, which go in my truck.

As far as where to get all these type of space saving type of equipment just try and do come website searching for some of the best deals and places to buy. The Chemical Guys would be a great place to start.

Always keep your minds open to newer and possibly better solutions when ever they arrive. You just never when that one hot tip or trick is going to offer some terrific changes to the way to do business.

Now, Go sell a million!!!

I don't have a canopy yet either. I was looking at a cheap one, but I hate to buy one that will not last. Keeping my eyes open. I am in the northeast, so it isn't as big a deal as it would be in a warmer region.

I bought mine at walmart for $80 a piece. I have had them for about 3 years now and the only thing wrong with them is the bag that they are enclosed in are getting a little ripped on the corners
