'Slow' audio on computer problem...

The Old Grey Whistle Test
Toshiba M65 S809 Windows XP op system

I’m having intermittent problems with the audio (voice / music sounds like its running at incorrect rpm).

Tried thus far - drivers have been up-dated, Windows media player v11 upgrade, Anti-virus and malware software run.

I'm a better ChemE than I am at IT so be gentle :)

Is this primarily happening when streaming music or videos online? Or does it happen when playing MP3s on the hard drive or CDs/DVDs as well?

-What's your CPU and memory load like when this is happening? (Task Manager)

-What change did you make before it happened? Do you have a recent system backup before the issue happened?

-Do you have the restore cd and an external hard drive?

It happens intermittently on all audio (Internet TV & radio, cd playback, spotify, YouTube, etc

I'm trying to figure out CPU usage (can't seem to find 'Taskmaster')

Click Start, then Run, type "taskmgr" and hit enter. It should come right up. What you're looking for will be on the "Resources" tab, and you'll have to watch it while the audio is running to see what the CPU/Memory are doing.

Thanks - It fluctuates between 30 - 60% and then 100% for a second and then 30-50%

Connecting to Internet radio it peaks at 100% for a while drops for a few seconds and then 100% again (useful tool, I told you I was no IT guy, at school all they taught us about computers was how to spell it, and then at wok we had an IT dept to help non-computer savvy guys like me)

Well, CPU being at 100% will certainly cause playback issues, back to the original questions, what changed before the problem started (did you install anything, update stuff, etc?) And do you have a backup and restore options.

-If you have an older backup, you can backup the current config, restore the old just to verify its not hardware issues.

-You might also try going back to an older system restore point

The golden rule is computers run great until someone changes something. You need to get back to the running great point.

I'd be interested to know what the chipset is and what size RAM (and speed). Chances are you might be using a computer that physically can not keep up with the CPU/RAM loads you are putting it through.

Basically, you are moving to dang darn fast around the interwebs and your computey box cannot handle it!!
