i just had my carpet and seats out to clean them up nice. they turned out good but now there is a slight smell in my upholstery :wall . every time i put a new car scent air freshener in, it only lasts about a day, when it used to kind of make a signature scent in my car. i would really appreciate any input on how to get my car smelling how it did, thanks.

What did you use to clean your upholstry?

If you get the carpet too wet the water will soak in and cause a musty smell.

i took the carpet out and used woolite then scrubed then sprayed hot hot water on it from the pressure sprayer and shop vac extracted it. then let it sit out and dry with fans blowing on it from every angle for 2 days

Was it 100% dry when you re-installed it? Did the padding under the carpet get wet? Did all the dirt come out of it? What does it smell like?

i believe it was 100% dry when i put it back in. most of everything came of pretty good but its kind of a musty smell. not too strong though, just enough to annoy a guy

Perhaps a little carpet freshener or baking soda would help. Sprinkle it on, lightly brush it in, and vacuum. If the problem persists, try some Oust or Febreeze. Good Luck. My son once left the windows open in his old Cavalier and it rained buckets! It took forever to get that musty smell out of his car.

Masking the odor is only a temporary fix. Masking agent and H2O are the predominant ingredients in most air fresheners. You will not get rid if an odor unless you remove the origin.

Sometime odor is not easy to trace. You may think it is one thing, the carpet but the origin may be in the in cabin filters, carpet padding or if you over wet cloth seats even a petrified french fry in a map pocket. You also need to remember when pulling seats ECT that you should inspect padding and wipe down floor boards.

Drying in the sun seems like a good idea but it takes time and when moisture slowly evaporating is likely to cause mold or mildew. The trick is to drying textile interior components are moving air and quickness.

If I can help further let me know.

Good luck.
