Simoniz Rotary Polisher @ CT

Have been looking at the 7" Simoniz rotary polisher at crappy tire as a cheap way to get started on a rotary. To me it looks alot like a Makita 9227, does anyone know where Simoniz gets them as I am guessing it's a rebrand of some sort. For $99.99 it seems like a good starter machine to learn with and which won't have to stand up to a alot of use initially.

The description in the online catalog says it only has 2 speeds, but looking at it in person it has a speed dial on top from 1-6? Anyone own it or know of others experiences? I searched the forum and all i come up with is references to their orbitals.

:thx

sometimes you get what you pay for. i would just save another $100 and just get a good reputable brand (hitachi, makita, dewalt, etc)...

Ya doesn't make much sense spending $100 bones on a piece of crap polisher only to spend $225 a few months down the road once you master it? That's over $300 you'll be spending and you will have 2 polishers - save up for one good one.

I hear that ultimate detail machine (UDM) is pretty good maybe that's an alternative for you.

'I hear where you guys are coming from, typically I always buy quality once, but right now cash is tight. The UDM might make sense if I did not have a polisher at all, but I have a 7336 already so was looking to go rotary. If I was looking at alot of rotary work it would be a Makita or Hitachi no question. I also need to budget for a backing plate and 7.5\" pads too.\r\n\r\nIf someone has one I would love to hear how it has stood up, like I said it won\'t get used that much. If I look at posts on the cheap Chicago rotary\'s, the consensus seems to be they do fine for light use. I would just get the $29 one at Harbor Frt, but they only use Fedex (bend over) to ship to Canada so it won\'t save much if anything by the time it get\'s here.'

P.S. Can anyone tell me where all of the \'s and \r\n\r\n in this message came from??

Pictures of the Simoniz 7" Rotary and the Makita 9227, other than the bale handle on the Makita they sure look the same to me....

Thought of that, but with shipping and the good old Fedex/UPS etal brokerage ripoff it won't save much if anything. Plus if I need to return it I can just go back to my local CT store.

So has anyone ever bought one of these at crappy tire (or know somenone who did?). I know it's a Simoniz which isn't the greatest name out there, but it sure looks like a re-branded Makita.

hmm, i highly doubt it is a rebranded Makita...I could bet you it is a rebranded WEN polisher. I am guessing you are talking about the 39-9013? I goes for 1/2 the price sometimes. I don't think that most people who buy these know what they are doing with them, so I doubt they will be happy with the results. I would rather go with that cheap coleman unit for $49 or a powerfist for 79. Both are probably better than the one from CT...but maybe that is because I think a lot of CT's stuff is junk (former Auto Parts / Cash)

Yup, that's the one and you're right it was $69 this summer. Do you have any info on the 2 units you mentioned? While I would agree most of CT's stuff is so-so, looking at those pictures other than the handle (the Makita comes with a side handle as well) they are the same unit. FWIW if Harbor Frt. shipped USPS I would buy the $29 Chicago and be done with it, I however refuse to support terrorism so Fedex etc. is definitely out.

I bought a Powerfist rotary a few years ago. Kind of big, kind of heavy, kind of loud. But it works! It has variable speed and a "pause" followed by a gradual increase in speed up to whatever it is set for. I think this is a nice feature, as you don't have the pad going from 0-1500 RPM in a flash, so you run a lesser risk of burning the paint or losing control at start up.

Of course, there are better ones available, but it might be one to look at for a starter.

Googled powerfist and remembered Princess Auto sells them and that they were on sale earlier this year. Thanks for the feedback, I am going to keep an on PA's sale flyers and try to scoop one on sale, if I remember right they were around $60 ish. You are right they are big and heavy but should be fine for learning on and building upper body strength:grinno:

:thx

P.S. Googling "powerfist" comes up with some very interesting hits....

Where are you in Canada? I bought one of those units as an extra Rotary in case of my main unit dying.(My main unit was acting up so I took it apart and has been fine since). I took the unit out of the package to see how loud it was etc. and it is not bad for the money. It has variable speeds (every number is in 500 rpm steps) so you have options for 500, 1000, 1500 rpm etc., but I don't recall if you could do in-between those steps. Let me know if you are close to London, Ontario as I got it for the $69.99 price and would sell it if your interested.

Thanks, Greg.

Hey Greg, thanks for the info. and offer to sell. Only problem is I am in Alberta or I would definitely take you up on the offer as I am planning on waiting for either CT or PA to put their rotary on sale for ~ the $70 mark. When you fired it up do you remember if it has a soft start?

:thx

Yes, it has a soft start and you can select speeds between the 500 rpm settings on the dial!(I just ran it without a pad to test!)

Hey Greg, thanks so much for checking that out for me. For a cheaper rotary it sounds like not a bad unit. Thanks again for all of your feedback:up

wow that is far. I am in the North end of Calgary.

Actually now that the Deerfoot connector is done I can be downtown in 2.5 hours or so. Hitting the southside in just under 2 hours, then fighting the traffic like everyone else. I left Calgary in 90' and have no desire to go back, just too big now. Was a really nice city when I was there before.
