Sheepskin Mitts: What are the differences?

OK, all you autopians who use genuine sheepskin mitts:

Where do you buy your mitts? I have purchased mine from auto parts stores (Pep Boys, Advanced Auto) and even a Detailer's Choice sheepskin mitt from Walgreens! I see very little difference between them other than the way they are stitched and the cuff.

My question is: are the expensive sheepskin mitts like Griot's and CMA sell any better? I am not talking about the rubber glove that is inside the Griots, etc - I mean is the wool surface any different?

I just wanna know what makes them worth 18 bucks!!!

:nixweiss

More consistent quality maybe? :nixweiss A while ago Steve commented on "inconsistent quality" on these mitts, and I didn't really know what he meant until I saw some cheap retail mitts. Some were really, really soft and fluffy while others were less so. Still, I'd just hand pick one out myself for the price.

I guess it depends on who makes it & the quailty. I have one from viking and its actually very good, nice & soft and thick. I've seen some in auto-stores that seem like total crap the viking one I have was about $7 I believe id recommend it.

Okay... I am a 100% complete and total noob here... trying to take a giant step away from the "car wash" crowd.

Got the full Blackfire set and claybar, but these mitts have me wondering as to uses.

Are these for washing or dusting? I can't garage, so a daily dusting would go a LONG way toward keeping my truck looking good between washings. As it is, I am sometimes washing twice a week, only because of dust.

What is the best thing for a simple evening "before bed" dusting?

I bought a 3 pack at Costco last summer. One shed like crazy(My fault) The other two are still good despite being used on a regular basis.

My wife has a cat that is very soft and fluffy though. Hmmmmmmm.............................

I did our "CD Test" on some "eurow" brand mitts I picked up yesterday. If I'm lightly going over the cd I do not get marring. If I put some pressure into it (not throwing all my weight on it) I get light marring, and quite a bit of it as a matter of fact.

I'm really not sure what to make of it. I would imagine the mitt weighed down with water/soap might exert as much pressure as I put on the CD to scratch it.

These came from WalMart and were ~5.00. I think I walked out the door with two for 10.75 after tax.

After conducting the CD test, I am inconclusive on this. They're soft, and very very plush but will they scratch my clearcoat?

I wanna know what makes CMA's mitt worth 18 bux.

[added later]

These mitts, by the way have a leather backing to them. The inside of the mitt is hide/skin what have you, so I'd imagine it's not a Poly blend mitt. But .... looks/marketing/etc etc can be decieving.

I like the viking ones also. I also have one from target for about $7 also made by sun something. The quality varied a little so I hand picked a soft one; works great.

Has anyone ever bought the one from CMA?

Glad to hear you have good results.

I'm always aprehensive of products I see in Wal* or Target or Auto[insert extra addon to name here]

Mainly because they sell what the unknowledgeable consumer *might* purchase.

So, a mitt that may or may not scratch the clear coat of your vehicle is not their first thought, they wanna make their 20-30% on the item.

Basically what I'm sayin is, Are the 5-7 dollar Sheepskin mitts *as good* as the 18 dollar ones on CMA's page? What makes them different? (yeah I know there are a LOT of factors on that).

After feeling my mitts, they feel plush and soft... but doing the CD-TEST (as above by me) yeilds results that I feel uneasy about so my (and many others) answers about these mitts is inconclusive.

or did you try the test on the cd with soap and water?

The mitt was dry. Light 'sweeps' over the CD did not give me scratches, but when I bear down a little bit on the cd I get lots of them, but they are very fine.

I suppose with soapy water for lubricity that might not happen. I'm not sure though :nixweiss

I want to see something that doesn't scratch a CD dry, to even think about putting it on my paint.

Even my MF towels scratch if I bear down on the cd with one. So I try and make sure to use the MF towels as 'lightly' as I can.

I do believe though that CD's are more soft than the typical clear coat, but I understand the effectiveness of a CD as a test mechanism.

If the interior of the mitt is hide than you do have a natural wool product. Since wool is a natural product there is going to be variances in quality and performance from country of origin and from sheep to sheep. There are a many different species of sheep that supply wool to the world market, and trust me when I say the ones that give us the fine Moreno Italian wool are not the ones supplying the mitts. My suggestion is to keep doing what you are doing; feel various ones until you find one up to par. As to the $18.00 dollar wool mitt I would first find out what country it is from.

I dunno, I've seen some pretty shady mitts with hide on the inside.

I thought there were some that were a poly blend, hide or not.

Even though it looks like wool it might not be. VW sent me a glove that looks and feels like wool but is really a poly material.....

I don't think that mitt feels like real wool. In fact I thought it felt pretty harsh. Aside from the 100% poly tag along with it
